1983 280zx fuel leak
1983 280zx fuel leak
recently got this car just a side project. it came to me running (when i first drove the car i could smell fuel but it wasnt leaking atleast not noticeable for me to see) i went on a 4 1/2 week vacation and now the car wont start. (battery and starter both are within voltage and battery is also 100% charged)
i commented on another users thread about there car not cranking. so i got the idea to spray some starter fluid into the throttle body, but before i did that i put 5gals of gas into the tank. after i tried to start the car i heard some liquid checked under on the floor and there was gas everywhere. does anyone have a diagram or manual of where the fuel lines are so i can check for leaks. i can visibly see some areas where the gas was dripping out, and ill start checking there. but in the mean time does anyone have any suggestions or has gone through a similar problem? and if so what did you end up doing?

It could be a bud fuel line between the tank and the fuel pump or between the fuel return line and the tank. Both have rubber hoses that could be bad. You would have to pull the tank out to see for sure.
In the back of the car, under the carpet and the foam insulation there is a round access cover to get at the fuel level sending unit/supply and return lines. Remove the cover and see if you can find the leak.

If you’re dealing with a car like a 280ZX and you can’t find the original build info — I’d suggest checking the monroney sticker by vin https://carfast.express/en/window_sticker I once used it on a different import and got a full breakdown of factory-installed gear and optional packages, which helped a lot to understand exactly what the car left the factory with. Not a 100% guarantee, but probably the best available fallback when none of the original documents exist.
