Do it Rod! I think the only thing you'll need is a flexible brake line to mount up to the caliper.

I just might be able to pull off this conversion before MSA. The Akebono North America rep is working on rounding me up some new Akebono built toyota calipers right now. it's really only a minor upgrade as far as the calipers go, but it opens the door to far better choices of brake pads (Akebono's rock!). What I would really like to do would be to increase the rotor diameter front and rear. That would look and work better.

Rod.

Alls you'd need to do would be to make, or get someone to make, a caliper relocation bracket and find a larger rotor that matches up. Them big rotors will go great with your new 18's

Yeah I talked with them a long while back about custom rotor hats so I could run a larger 2 piece rotor. They never mentioned the bracket then but they did mention a complete big brake package along with 5 spoke hubs. I dont see the hubs listed on their site anymore though.

If they're the right ones, they should fit right over. Did you try taking off the rotor to see if it will even bolt up? Post some pics of the calipers.

i already took them back, i had pads and everything, it was like 300 bucks so i just said screw it until later. the spot in the calipers was too narrow by 1/4 inch for the rotors. it would have mounted directly aboce the mounting tabs. im wondering if it only works on the 82 type strut brake setup.

79 - 83 should have the same front strut mounts. There weren't any changes on the fronts.

According to both MSA & VB catalogs: 79 - 83 pads & rotors are the same:

interesting, was it the wrong year calipers then? or did the parts guy screw up? i really want 4 piston calipers. my new wheels will clear them. the only other thing though is that the calipers didnt have threads in the mounting holes like the 280's does.

Yeah I think it's only the rears that were changed. Longer caliper and smaller rotor for the later cars in the rear.
