4 piston calipers

First off, I'm sure this has been discussed before, however, most of the stuff I've seen has been for the S30 cars, not the S130's.

My question is, will the S12+8 4 piston calipers for vented rotors bolt on to my car? I've seen that on the S30's I need to get the zenki 300ZX non turbo (84-85) rotors, but will I need them on my car?

I'm planning on redoing the whole front setup on my car, not because I need it, but because I want to, and I don't like the single piston design and how it wears one brake pad waaay before the other...

Thank you.

Yes... it has. If you SEARCH for "S12" in the 280zx section, you will find a plethora of info.

I guess it really is that hard to answer a question properly these days...

I've searched and searched (even after you posted those links [that I've NEVER seen before, how in the world did you find them?!] and searched some more I've onyl found stuff for S30 cars, and the SINGLE post that someone made here that wasn't even conclusive...) Guess I'll just have to go to the junkyard sometime and find out for myself...

Apparently you didn't read that thread I posted

So to "cut to the chase".... S12 calipers, Z31 rotors, and hub / wheel adapters, and wa-la! Sooo hard!!! Tho sometimes "figuring things out for yourself" can be a good thing... just sometimes....

Aight, to bring up an old, dead thread, I went to the junkyard today and did a quick test fit of some 4-piston calipers... (the ones with S12+8 stamped on the side)

first problem:
neither the S130 strut nor the 4-piston caliper is threaded, so one would have to be threaded by you.

put the calipers where the stock calipers would bolt to:
The Caliper is about 1/2" too far outward.

Put the calipers where they bolt to on S30 chassis cars:
the caliper is about 1/2" too far inward.

Put the caliper on top of the mounting ears:
lines up perfectly, but you'd probably have to run like 14" rotors just to be able to use the pads...

Now, my first thought was to space the brake rotor back enough to fit in the caliper....
Nope, the control arm would end up grinding against the rotor (and especially bad if you get roll center adjusters)

What I didn't do, however, was to try the whole Z31 hub, I guess I could go back again and try that, but I don't really think it'll work, or will it?

As previously stated several times ( ) the S12+8's aren't the right fit. You need the S12 caliper (pre-85). There IS a version of the S12+8 caliper meant for non-vented rotors that "may or may not" work. What year truck did yours come off of?

Thus the reason your S12+8's didn't come close to fitting.

If it weren't so freaking cold, I'd hit the junk yard for a set just to try it out.

I also looked into that, I checked the part numbers on Vatozone's website (not the best place for information, but it should be accurate) and a '79, and '84 Toyota caliper is the same part number as a '86 caliper..........

84 4wd front caliper: part# C8648
86 4wd front caliper: part# C8554

Napa's part#'s are different too.

79 part# CAL SE1372
86 part# CAL SE1378

Apparently Checker / Kragen doesn't carry "old" calipers. Stupid them...

Anyway, if you want to do this, you should probably try the correct parts.

lol you **** bastard :P

just too bad I've yet to see any pre-'86 toyota trucks in my junkyard (but I've found a complete aftermarket turbo kit on a 280Z there before... /facepalm)

Well this is a kick in the pants for you. I did a search on car-parts.com and found none in NV, and several sets up here in Utah for $25.

If your feeling frisky, you can get the s13WB calipers, z31 rotors and hubs and get some brake pad spacers made, or use a wilwood .75 inch wide rotors.

^those don't work as well... they end up in the same place as the S12+8's I've tried, and I'm not willing to put the hub any farther out in the wheelwell than it already is

I've got a couple ideas in my head, gonna borrow a friend's Z32 calipers and do some test-fitting/measuring

the mounting ears on the z32 calipers don't line up and have the same offset as the toyota calipers.

If your thinking on making an adapter, someone already does.

okay. They probably don't make an adaptor for small rotors, I want to run either stock-size or slightly larger (less than 11") so that I can still run 14" wheels.

You are wasting your time if all this is to keep the stock tiny rotors. I suggest reading some books about performance brakes before you do anything else....

I'll second that. Ya wont find me changing calipers without getting bigger rotors out of the deal. Matter of fact I kinda have my eyes on some 12" rotors....

lol I didn't see your post till now...

I know how brakes and how bigger brakes work better, but I'm going to get 14" wheels, and that really restricts me as far as brake sizes goes...
