Rust...

So my Z has a pretty big rust problem, only in a couple of spots that aren't cosmetic though (cosmetic I can ignore, this car is going to be a race/track ****)

First pic is the passenger side floorboard (or what's left of it), second pic is passenger side behind the rear wheel well. I've got plenty of donor metal to bolt/weld into place (courtesy of Guilford County and the sign I took out with the driver's side door in a drifting incident), just wondering what else you guys would recommend on top of that.

I went over the car with a fine tooth comb looking for rust and banging out any unsave-able metal, those two spots are all I'm worried about, although the rear quarter panels are rusted into oblivion.

On a different topic all together, what are the downsides of removing the metal bumpers for a cleaner look (and reduced weight...)?

Follow the link in my sig and browse to the 2nd and 3rd pages of pictures to see how I repaired my floors and subframe. The spare tire well I fiberglassed. The floor and subframe I cut out the rust, cleaned up the sheet metal, and made and welded in a patch. Sometimes its easier to make several small patches to fill one hole and weld them all together. If I were doing it over, I'd take the time to grind down my welds. There's no substitute for good workmanship.

Good luck

THere are really no disadvantages, it just might look kind of funny if you just take them out.

that rust is pretty much exactly what my car had, all that fixs it is time some new metal and a good welder. just take your time and do it right, even tho its a track car doesnt mean you should do a shoddy job. dont forget that metal protects you. most sanctioning bodies dont allow crappy work or rusty holes.

I'm fairly alright with fiberglass, so if I take the bumpers off I'd smooth everything over to make it look right. Or at least I'd try to.

Yeah, that's why I want to fix the all the non-cosmetic rust. Part of the reason I want to get rid of the bumpers is because on the back, the quarter panels are rusted beyond repair, all the way up to where the bumper attaches.

I've got a plan for re-working the back end with fiberglass without the bumper to make it look presentable, should be nice if it works out like it's supposed to.
