cuz the 280zx flows so nicely till u get to the back where its just lacking i mean i like the the 79-81 lights look fine but i would like a more flush lookin rear end with frenched license plate or even move the licenses plate to the bumper besides what do u need 2 cams for anyway

As others have said, its not so much the tail lights themselves, it the lack of integration (or whatever you want to call it) across the back. Hate that big lump of a number plate light thing but it houses the hatch lock.

Perhaps the lock could be done away with, the lump removed and the plate lit from lights recessed into the bumper.

I know this thread is older but I needed to clarify something...a bit O' history...
It was stated by wreckedj30 and Jfairladyz that the lights on the Shelby Mustang Cobra (the sequential lights) were from a Cougar. This is in fact not the case. The tail lights used in the 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500 KR were in fact from a 1965 Ford Thunderbird. They were a new design on the 1965 model year Thunderbird and were adopted to the Cobra. Wheeeew, yes that took some research.

A picture of the T-Bird to help you make your point, since you forgot to do it...

Nice Z's guys, but to me the big round tail lights makes me think of a rolling stop light. It also detracts from the beauty of the Z since it stands out so much. I fell in love with the original lines of the Z, and maybe in the future will install a body kit in the front or side but nothing too drastic as I don't think it's as beautiful.

The photochops in this thread mis-represent the actual size of the lights. I mocked them up on my car and they are not nearly as big as the chops would make them appear. I'll try to get some pics up soon.
