Cause of Burn Damage to Top of "Strut Cover" Trim Piece?

Hi, in my my 1983 280ZX 2+2, (non-turbo), both trim pieces in the back that seem maybe to cover the struts (?) have burn damage. What would cause this? When I get "new" trim pieces, what do I need to do inside the trim or under the car or ??? to prevent this?

Thanks!

Hum... I don't see any pics, but the rear strut caps are prone to sun fade if that's what you mean.

So, when I get the car back from the mechanic and I start in on working on the interior, you don't think I need to add any insulation, any thing else underneath that part?

no, theres no reason for anything to be burning that from below.

a PO was doing something odd at some point

If I had to guess, I'd say someone was using a propane torch to loosen stuck bolts . . . although that's an odd place for that to happen. Maybe on a strut bar that used to be installed?

I'll have to ask PO. I don't think he knows, but he can contact his PO, who might know. It is odd. If I figure it out I'll update.

Maybe the PO's PO had a fire extinguisher there, and instead of chemicals, there was propane inside...

Juss get a new one? If there is a 280 out at the yard with a clean trim piece i'll grab it for you.

We must find our strut trim saboteur, this is a very confusing case of damage, my dear watson.

Mr. Holmes, I'll happily work on the mystery, but if you find the trim pieces (same burn on both sides), I'd rather just get the replacements!

Lolzie Kay, I'll see if I can't find one out there in a few days, no real guarantees, they usually post their 280s on craigslist, and there are none on there =(
