that is why im a little upset at some of the responses that arised from this simple post intended as something fun. it kinda shows how narrow minded some people are. Traditional people need to wake up and realize that our z cars are just simply outdated and under what technology puts out today.
i love my z though.

I agree with David, our Z technology is outdated, and nothing that hasn't been done before. You ALL know DARN well that if they came out with a simple (lol) VTEC, VVTi (or any type of variable valve timing/lift system) in an inline-6, or V8... . people would be swapping them in their Z's!!!!
Variable valve timing and lift in let's say a 3.5 inline-6 on a stand-alone system found in a junkyard.... I know I'd throw my Z engine OUT and put that in!!! Assuming it's built well and effective.

id throw my z motor out for a can of pepsi and a snickers bar.
seriously i dont think our motors can compare to the honda/acura v6, the supra Inline 6, the bmw inline 6. we are out of the water on this one. we have old technology. Now, if we can make it work with the best of today, then that is an acomplisment. Also that is if we ever get past keeping the motor maintained period. it seems like there is always something. And if you fix that "something", then be ready for another "something" to pop up.

the se-r motor (QR25 something)

I've only had one Z I owned it for 4 months and put about 15 thousand miles on it, it never gave me any problems, and i got (what I thought) was great gas mileage, about 400 miles to a tank. 1982 280zx... Nothing ever broke, the engine never gave me any problems, so im wondering why you said yours always breaks

Hey guys! Take it easy!
The z-car is a classic. It doesn`t have to be a race-monster... Ok, a honda with twin-v-tech-something will beat it, but it does`nt have ...IT.
Why are you so hung up on ponies? The power in a slightly modified z is sufficient! The best part of driving is cruising.. not racing, ok it`s fun but some day u end up dead.. or in a wheelchair.
I love to take a ride with in my little beloved zx.. the targas off and a slow down-beat tune, enjoying the wind, sun and the growl of the inline 6.

Heck, the turbo inline 6 motors still have a lot of power for what they are. I'm still in high school and my car is the fastest one at the school! It's a lot of fun to race and cruise and still get 25mpg. That's a lot better than a 350 chev.

i got my Z and i can tell u its not a speed demon but jus like u said it
cruize with the Tops off, turn on the beats not a care in the world thats what its about for me occasinaly if som1 wants to revv their engine well so be it ill try my best but i know i wont expect a 10 second car out of it ...

My old man owns the thing and is the reason that I am always trying to make mine faster (t3/t4 turbo, intercooler, engine rebuild) He is running a 2.3L ford with 22 psi of boost. That thing is faster than hell!! I'll post another picture of it in my profile so you can see the whole thing.

jeremy, just checkin out your ride...nice. my dad had a hillman husky, sold it when i wuz about 5 [1966 or so]. i'm curious as to which year/model ford probe seats you have in your z. also, are they lower or higher than stock [being taller, i have ceiling clearance probs.]

I believe the seats were from a '96 probe GT. That is about all that I know though. I am 5' 11" and don't have any clearance problems with the seat in the totally lowered position. If I raise it up though, my head will hit. Also, it hits when I wear a helmet. Without the helmet though, I have about three inches clearance. I mounted the to the stock mounts with just a little modification. You could probably cut out the stock mounts to get more clearance though. You might run into width problems with that though. Hmm.. I would say if you are over six foot, stay away from the probe seats unless you really like them (which I did!!) So, did you dad do anything with the hillman or was it just stock?

L28 Outdated????
Well the L28 must be outdated by now it's about 20 years old and the design is even older. But it's what paved the way for such engines as the RB series found in the skylines. Which would whip such Vtec's.

l motors actually hold there own pretty well ya know i just was at a auto-x today and spanked every honda / integra there these were all fairly well set up cars coilovers sway bars strut bars ect. r compound tires and the intake and header and exghuast upgrades.
not the shopping cart winged sticker tuned/w ith fart cans and 18 inch wheels that i know come to mind and i gotta tell ya that not bad for a 3000lbs 280zx thats 23 years old my cars not a 3.0 or turbo'd either just set up comprobly to theirs and that is pretty respectable for an l motor w/ a cam and headers let someone put a 23 year old honda out there to compare and it just wont happen we have tons to be proud of yes their is some highly tweaked new honda product out there that hauls a** but how about comparing that to a equally tweaked sr-20 det silvia or 180sx/or the skyline or a z32tt they just wont stack up
yes i think we should be proud of what the l motor is capable of and try to compare cars that are of the same generation the fact that our 20-30 year old cars even stand a chance much less often win/compete well is awesome !

I think Pinto panels work too...
Im just torn between doing that or the Vega front....
As for engine swaps I was thinking that Suzuki had a car with a 3 clynder that gets good mileage and that would be my primary engine for cruising and beating Civic's and Acura's (after adding the NOS mats,stickers,wheel covers she should be real fast..)
Then just kick on the front engine for real speed.....
