It has been done with a 260Z - I have seen the photos. It has also been done to the VL Commodore (delivered with an RB30E). You could ask the very same, and valid questions to the guy who converted his Suzuki Swift GTi into a 4WD turbo Cultus (the car cost over $100,000 AUD by the end of it).
The 2WD floorpan has no trans tunnel.... yet the conversion was still done.
There is no separate xfer case/diff with the RB26DETT. The case is built into the gearbox & the diff forms part of the sump assembly.
IMHO it is one of those conversions that you only do if you have money to burn...
