New by looking at a ‘77 280z

Hello everyone. I’m Dustin. I live in the panhandle of Texas and I’m just getting into the Z cars. I currently have a ‘63 Karmann ghia coupe to finish up for my wife and I’m looking for a car for me to play with now. I grew up drag racing and loving big block Chevelles and cameros etc. I’ve really started liking the z cars and think it would be a great investment and fun car to have. I have restored a few cars and I’m very ,mechanically inclined and I’m a welder.

This is one is A project that runs and drives but he says it needs frame rail repair. Asking $5500

Welcome to ZDriver!
I... don't think you finished your post? You found a 77 280Z you're looking at?

Saw the car today. It’s really solid except for the frame rails. Fires right up and sounds goods. Is $5500 fair for this car from what y’all can see? The interior is maybe 6\10. Solid driver after I put it back together.

Thoughts?

$5500 is way too high... that's more like $1500.

Oh don’t get me wrong. I think it’s about a $3000 car. It starts and runs really nice. All the parts are there it looks like. I was thinking maybe you saw something that needs replaced that I wasn’t aware of that is pretty expensive or if the frame rails are something to be worried about.

The paint definately brings it down. A repaint would be up in the 7-10g range I’m sure. I’ve seen 280’s for 6000 with driver paint so I don’t think this is a $5500 car at all. He seems to be a pretty tough old man so I don’t know if he’ll come down that much without being insulted but hell I don’t know him. Cash talks but I’m not married to this car. I found another one in original faded paint for 3500 but it’s an auto. He says it runs but needs work. I’ve read that sorting out the fuel injection on these cars can be a headache and expensive. I can afford to work on the car but I’d like to stay within the value range if possible.

Also my plans for one of these is to hot rod and customize. So originality is not paramount but I won’t hack one up to the point of killing the value either.
