Help new owner-240z w/2.8 turbo
Howdy! I'm the proud new owner of a '72 240z with a 2.8l conversion and turbo. I think the turbo is an add-on, it's a Rotomaster 04BRM9, which I hear is now the Garrett T04B. My problem is I don't know what is from what on my new ride. It's got an L28 block, N47 head, intake marked E88, the turbo, and a Holley double-pumper. 1) Was the L28 turbo ever offered N/A as opposed to fuel injected? 2) Is the block/head/intake combo a stock set from a 280z/x turbo? 3) What turbo's did Nissan use for the 2.8L 280z's? I wound up with the car because the turbo is shot. Looks like I can rebuilt or by rebuilt for <$450. Don't know if you can see the turbo hiding down there in the photo, but I want to know if that dual intake thingy is a stock piece, and if so, from what? Also, no idea how old this mod. on the car is. No intercooler, or boost control that I can see. Given the engine is probably a little tired, should I have these items on with the next turbo? Any help would be great!

Re: Help new owner-240z w/2.8 turbo
The head/intake (and probably the block too) aren't oem turbo parts. Between 81-31 (280zxt production years), f54 turbo block, p79 or p90 turbo head, the stock turbo is an AiResearch (garret) t3, so somebody did a little hotrodding to the Z you purchased. Just to let you know, if you really plan on going turbo you should consider a turbo f54block/p90head/manifolds, everything etc. from a 280zxt, and find a hybrid t3/t04.. depending on your boost needs. Look into corky bell's book "maximum boost," where everything is described in full. From small turbo 1.6 litre projects to twin turbo'd-intercooled big block chevy's, this book has you covered, gauranteed. As far as pertaining specifically to Z's, you'll find endless information and a total boon here:

IMO, unless you know specifics on your compression ratio (and whether pistons are in fact forged for turbo applications), your best bet would be to find a cheap longblock, have some work done to it, get a hybrid turbo, buy an isuzu npr or dsm conquest/starion fm intercooler, and some modest boost controls, and you're looking at an easily attained 300 hp. It all depends on what kind of horsepower and boost goals you have. I'm currently doing a similar swap to what I mentioned above. So far I've budgeted around 3000 $$, not a bad deal, for a "bolt-on" (does attatching to the flywheel count? hehe).
Good luck Kurt,
