gutless z, bad gas odor...

hi my 74 260z stinks like gas all the time, especially if i give more than 3/4 throttle. and its fairly gutless i think (i dont know its my first Z, but i lost in a race to a damn stock 79 honda civic). other than those symptoms it runs excellent, very dependable year round.
ive checked the plugs, cap/rotor, wires they all look good. im just wondering if there is something simple i can check before i decide if i want to shell out big bucks for new carbs vs. just getting a whole 280z engine....
it has round top hitachi sidedrafts (i think), 4 speed.

Well, I haven't done this yet, but you can re-tune your carbs. Supposivly you need to do that every 6 months on a dialy driver. That will make sure that one carb is not running more rich than the other. Also, the proper mixture will add more power. Running too much fuel takes away power. Another thing you can do is swap out your distributor for an electronic distributor from a 1981-83 280zx non-turbo. Put on a little bit higher powered coil. That will give you some nice spark. Be sure to put in spark plugs for a 280zx also. Those plugs will be made to burn hotter. After that simple and not too costly upgrade, you can see if you like the Z as it is.

sounds like your car is running way too rich ... does the car blow any smoke out the tail pipe ? and are your plugs black on the ends ?if so get someone to lean the mixtures out for you
