engine building hell - EvanPurpleZ, are you around
Guys, I need some help on engine parts. Have complete bottom end F54 w/ dished, E31 head, plus a set of L24 rods from my 240.
The head's been milled - anyone know what max milled is on E31 before the valves start banging into flat tops assuming no mill on block? It's already been milled .028 and I'll need to do more before I'm done.
What if I use the dished that were in F54 block and L24 rods - I heard on Zcar that Evan has an 2.8 block w/ 2.4 rods. Zengine cooks it up o.k. (w/ N42 comes out to 10.71:1), but is this just a hodge podge of stupidity and I should just find a new head, change to flat tops and keep the rest of the bottom end intact? The N42 is for flat tops, I probably won't see a huge difference, but whaddya think?
Thanks in advance for your mastery, patience and advice!

Just to let you know, and possibly correct problems in the future with your car. The N-42 head was NOT made for flattops, it was designed for the dished piston. You can use the E31 with dished pistons on a 2.8..even if it is milled, but you must correct the valve geometry. E31 with flattops will yeild over 10.5:1 cr btw

Hey buddy whatsup, someone told me i was being paged over at the forums
Yes, i have a 280 block with 9mm L24 rods. However, my pistons were custom made for me. Bearing that in mind, its not worth the cash for an na motor.
IMO... If i were to do another engine naturally aspirated here would be my choice (taking notes yet? lol) F54 block, stock bore, or maybe 020 over if nessicary. N42 head that had head work done to it.
I hate to say it, but ill never own a z with carbs again. The SDS is just too vesatile and reliable in my opinioin. However, Sus are better than stock FI systems.
Email me if you have more questions, im busy driving my new BOOST motor
Evan
BTW... regardless or supposed designs etc... you can use any head on any block provided the CR is okay for your app. A shaved E31 is not a good bet. The head doenst flow well without the oversized valves. The N42 has the best CR and flow characteristics for a flattop motor IMO. Ask norm, 12 second Su motor.
Well while i have it apart i might as well........
