Can't drive my Z :(

*Sniff* My baby was sidelined by a would-be car thief who tried to use a screwdriver, i guess, on the ignition. It didn't work, thank heavens, but now I need to find a new tumbler and key set for my 1978 280 Z. Dealership is asking $200. Would anyone be willing to tell me where I can get one for cheaper or find another way to bypass it at least temporarily to drive my car again. I have already installed a deadman switch to prevent future thefts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

Re: Can't drive my Z :(

Zwatcher,
My local locksmith had a box of Datsun tumblers. He said it was normal for them
to wear out. I had them redo my 260 and it cost me $50 for new tumbler with keys
and the labor. I took the ignition switch of the column and took it in to them.

Oh, and one other thing. How would I go about taking out the old tumbler?

Better yet, would their be way to bypass the ignition switch altogether or would that be too much work scince the nearest locksmith is in another town. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Can't drive my Z :(

Its easier to just take ignition assembly from the steering column.
remove the steering column cover just a few screws holding the
plastic on. On the ignition assembly there are 2 screws and to blank
head screws. You can try to take a set of needle nose pliers to the
blank head ( security screws) if that doesn't work you can try a punch to
get them out or slot the ends. After the screws are out unplug it and take
it to your locksmith.
