To buy or not to buy?? *260Z*
I don't know much about 260z's, so please help...
Guys, I've found a 260z down here in FL. It was originally an Arazona car, so there is no rust anywhere on the body. The floor pans are solid, all the interior *black* pieces around the rear windows & wheel wells are in good shape, the dash has a 1/2 cap on it, tires are bald, rims aren't originals, has holley carbs & a bigger cam, auto tranny.
I can pick it up for around $1300-1600. It will need some interior overhaul (new seats, carpet; a few misc. pieces), there are no bumpers, which is fine b/c i'd put an aero kit on it, and the rear hatch gasket needs replaced, at which time I'd do the door/window gaskets also. Paint is so-so, and the paint job isn't great. Probably needs a good $3000 at least put into it to make it a great Z car.
I'm not familiar with older Z cars. I have an 88SS 300zx right now, and my father and I have been looking to restore a classic Z. We had a 260 in mind, but it needs a ton more work than this one. Please let me know if you have an opinon wether or not I should grab it. Also, let me know what you guys think about engine swaps... v8 conversion?
Thankz,
Phil300z

Sounds like a pretty solid car; Rear Hatch glass can be a difficult thing to find, but it shouldnt be too hard (i have 2 extra rear hatch glass pieces here, but im in Ontario Canada), but for that price (1300$) would be a near bargain for a good body car. I'd prolly go for it, the interior components can be bought for pretty cheap (i'd get new style aftermarket seats, for like 300-500$ for a pair), carpet bits/pieces arn't expensive either, if the motor runs i'd definatly get it, but i'd look for a manual tranny, (possibly a late model 5speed from a light nissan pickup). and i'd start from there. you got any pictures of it?
Engine swaps.. When i do mine, i'm gonna look for an RB26DETT with a 6speed tranny, Alot of people do V8swaps, but V8's can be pretty heavy when compared to an aluminum i6 heh.

I'm not sure what the reference to a Nissan truck 5-speed is because those won't fit right. The Z-series engine (Z22, Z24) has the same bolt pattern on the back of the block but it is tilted to one side which would point your shifter out at an angle and mess up the rear transmission mount.
Go with a 1981-83 280ZX non-turbo 5-speed if you do a swap. Also use the 280ZX rear differential.

That question has been asked a lot. If you want real performance, the best way is to buy a 280zx turbo engine with the complete fuel injection and computer. Rebuild that engine and it drops in easy.
You can use a L26 with a turbo and blow-through carbs, but you're not going to be running much boost or you'll have to do other stuff like water injection. That's old school technology. Its better to just build a good N/A dual SU engine or go with the real Nissan L28 turbo.
The L26 has an open chambered head which is not good for forced induction anyway.
