280zx turbo motor and trany in a 280z?
The question is can it be done ans if so about how much usd will it cost? I'm new to this site and the Z-car scene. But I am aboslutly in love with the Datsun line of cars. Any info will be a big help to me. I'm trying to learn alot so please spell everything out. I don't know all the lingo of the Z-world yet.

yes, it can be done . There is a ton of information about the 280ZXT swap into a early Z. Depending on price and condition of the donor drivetrain it can be done for a couple of grand if you can do all your own work. If you want more HP then the stock turbo can produce then the cost skyrockets from there. Do searches on here and also Hybridz.org and Zhome.com for more information.

I would think that the swap can be done even cheaper than a couple grand. You can use the 280Z's transmission if you want, and the turbo engine sets right down onto the engine mounts. There is basically no money involved in doing the "swap" and no fabrication. If you can hook up all the electrical then you're set to go. The money comes into play if you want to rebuild anything.
I suppose a new exhaust would be in order and a shop can do it much better than most home mechanics.
The swap has been done a lot. The cost of a 280zx turbo varies greatly. They are getting a little harder to find. The cheap ones you find these days vary by what is wrong with them. Hopefully you can find one with major body damage and a good engine. If you buy one with a bad engine for cheap, well then you'll be putting some money into the engine just to get it running first.

Check HybridZ.org also, lots of stuff about swapping engines there. I bought my 82 ZXT car for $150 with only 70k miles on the clock, after teardown the rear main looks friggin new, perfect condition engine ready to beat on.
If you can find a donor car that would be a good way to go, easier to take your time to get all the wiring needed out and etc, although since mine is a 240 the wiring is a bit rougher being that I dont have FI to start with.

Yup Cheap$ Power
I just bought an 83 ZXT 2+2 Automatic on Ebay for $530 with 105K miles on it. I did not see it yet but spoke with the owner and supposedly it runs great and strong. I figure the Turbo Motor took less abuse in front of an automatic transmission.
I am going to bolt it up to my 76 280Z with my already installed 5-speed. I figure since the ZXT motor was automatic, I will need a manual ZXT ECU, a turbo flywheel, a turbo clutch, and some form of custom exhaust and thats it!
Am I missing anything? - Above, I assume it is strong enough to drop in without overhaul.

Yes, it sounds like you've got a good idea what to do. You are correct that you'll need a new clutch/flywheel setup. i think you can use your factory 280Z clutch and flywheel though. It depends on how much power you have though. It may slip, but probably not. The turbo uses a wider contact area, but the flywheel is nearly the same weight... if I remember right. Just more cyntrifical weight.

Thanks, I figured the 280Z flywheel would probaly bolt up but it might slip behind a Turbo Motor.
One more question for ZX and/or ZXT gurus.
Is the FI harness for the Turbo Automatic, interchangeable with the Turbo 5-speed harness?
In other words: Can just the Turbo Auto/Manual ECU's be swapped or does the whole harness need swapping?
