Okay, so I know these burned out because they're "protective devices" which will burn out so I don't burn any more stuff. I already corrected the problem by getting a new distributor cap as well as a rotor. ****, I even got new spark plug wires (they were fine but I pulled one out to hard and broke one). Ignition coil is perfect and everything else seems fine. Snw suggested looking at the starter and alternator




They don't look too bad, so now I guess I just have to replace the fusible links. Moment of truth...can I swap over the ones from my 79? I believe snw used an 81.

 

yes you can swap those fusible links. also, you see that clear wire going off to the right of the picture on the alternator? where does that go? just curious. and, YOU BROK MY PLUG WIRES!!!! those were ***** *** expensive taylor hi-pro wires!!!! and i was thinking of taking them off and putting on stock ones and putting them on my 280.... sigh.

 

Yeaaahhh, sorry...would you be interested in some shitty carquest ones? You can have the ones off the 280zx, they're NGK lawlz.

oh i forgot thats what those fusible links look like. they are one piece they pull out by pulling out the white blocks, then you can break the clip around them the white plastic and THEN they will work. no need to cut though.

 

There's more to it than that, lol.

Now I have to get it out from under here...The fun starts!

see how they are held together and in place by those white blocks. pop them out via removing the blocks and then break the block apart.

Like, look at it...it's all messed up not to mention the wires that lead up to it are also burned up and the rubber has melted.

hmmmm..... how long did you crank the car to burn those up like that? lol. i supposed you can try to swap the whole thing out and all the burnt part of the wire, more than likely theres only a few inches of burnt wire starting from the fusible link holder. not the whole thing

 

Dude, car was working fine. Then one day it didn't work and I saw this. Should I just cut the other one and make it fit with this one and then tape it up with electrical tape?

This is the only thing I can think of thats wrong with this car. Everything else checks out.

If I replace the whole thing it's going to be a real *****, though it'd probably be a lot safer than cutting up crap and using electrical tape.

Guess I should wait for TOF to help out, amirite? I'm sure he has the answer.

 

well if you splice the wires together properly it wont matter. use crimps or learn to solder really good. dont just tape them together lol. and yeah since the ECU is turning on but the car isnt cranking thats the prolem you need to figure out. why its not cranking or getting start signal to the starter and that should solve your problems.... man ive NEVER had this many problems in a row with that car what are you doing driving it through 3 ft of water and then climbing 45 degree inclines drifting burning out and cranking the car 10 mins straight trying to start it? lol.

 

I don't have a soldering gun, lulz.

You can hear a little click but no crank at all, starter is fine got it tested. Plus I can make it spin all day with a screwdriver. But yeah dude, I have the worst luck ever. I'm convinced it's the drastic climate change or god just hates me.

 

could be the climate change, the salty humid FL air might be causing **** to corrode faster and plus teh week and a half on the trailer outside im sure didnt help. well get some fancy connectors to splice the wires together dont just twist and tape. and try it out. its wierd for the relay in the car to kick but not give signal to the starter. or if you want.... you can wire up a push button start. get one and some wires all it is is supplying a hot signal to the starter solanoid when you want it to fire. not really a hard thing to do. just gott make sure to incoporate that wire i put in there for the ECU to get the start signal as well.

 

If I can't get this to work I'm getting maxifuse.

 

No one else has any input? I've been putting in extra ours at work just incase since school's over so I pay upgrade the fusible links to something modern like maxifuse but wanted to get other opinions on everything. Tomorrow's my day off, so yeah.
