280 fuel injected runs great then starts ruff

just got this sweetheart and working out the bugs, this is my first one so I'm totally unfamilar with these cars it runs perfectly, no hesitation anywhere, and has fantastic acceleration and just purrs at hwy speeds but after stopping then restarting it won't come up to idle smoothly and has to have the accelerator feathered or it sometimes dies, but once on the road again it clears up quickly and continues to run fine. The plugs are all nice and light brown, I do hear a little poping at the exhaust at idle and there is a little valve tapping but neither are excessive.

can this be related to the fuel injectors? it doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's getting worse, I didn't think I could get it started last time it just wouldn't fire and finally after numerous attemps and fanning the gas peddle it slowly built up rpm's where I could rev the engine, once on the road it takes about 30 sec's for it to clear up......... Me no likey...me need some suggestions please

I suggest downloading the FSM (S30 FSM Downloads) and performing all the sensor checks. Also check all grounds, fuel pressure, timing, etc.

Thanks for the info that fuel injection theory download will be invaluable!!

One thing more, the fuel pump seems excessively loud, is that a warning sign of trouble up ahead?

It's an external pump... it's going to be "louder" than an intank pump. Feel free to search... a lot of your basic questions have been asked and answered in detail.
