Hacks for fixing floppy side mirrors on 1977 280Z

I recently received my father's (now deceased) 1977 280Z. There are chrome mirrors on both the driver and passenger sides, and both flop around unacceptably. These are manually adjusted ball and socket type mounts. Before I look at buying replacements I wanted to see if there are any hacks for fixing the issue. I have looked on Youtube and tried to insert aluminum foil, small pieces of aluminum can, and pieces from a plastic soft drink bottle. Could not get them inserted into the ball and socket. My thoughts then went to some kind of gel that could be injected. I thought of silicon, grease, even spray insulation. Before I try any of these, I thought I'd like to get some other ideas. Thanks.
