Transmission problems

I have a 88 N/A automatic the problem is the transmission goes up to 5,000 rpm before shifting in the low gears and slips on the high gears. Any ideas of what it might be?

Have you checked the trans fluid level and color?

It has plenty of fluid. Now it is leaking fluid when it is cut off. Can the torque converter make it shift bad?

if it isn't full of fluid it could . it can't get the impeller up to speed .
was the fluid dark ,smell burnt? i would ask what the stall speed is but you may take out the clutch all the way only do it once if you do 2-3 seconds
I think 88 still has a governor
where is it leaking ? torque con. bushing worn can cause conv. to drain down & leak Autos gets complicated quick

I filled the torque converter with fluid before putting it on. And the fluid is clean and coming from the front of the bell housing. I am thinking the torque converter has a small crack because the fluid drips when running and pours out when the engine is cut off. I had a Chevy truck that did the same thing and it was the torque converter leaking. And as for the shifting and now a slight shutter sometime a when it need to shift I no idea what it could be.

that sounds like a torque conv. bushing and seal problem ,got your trans to motor aligning sleeves/ pins in?

There is usually a 4-5 day course for auto trans repair ,I' m just saying

The transmission is Alined. Itook it to a guy I trust today and he said he thinks it's the front seal or the torque converter and that the problem changing gears is most likely the bands need adjusting or replaceing. Does that sound about right to you?
