Quick & Cheap Mod.
I saw a thread over at My350Z that totally sold me on this quick, cheap, and really easy mod. Its just removing the rear wiper and it makes the back end look so much cleaner. I don't know about you guys, but I never used my rear wiper when it rained so this was a no brainer for me. Here's the DIY instructions. Pics to come soon.
TOOLS:
Flathead screwdriver (the longer the better)
12mm socket and driver
Rag
MATERIALS:
1" plug
Automotive grade silicone
Color matched paint
TIME = 10 minutes
COST = Less than $10 (paint + plug)
STEP #1: Remove rear wiper blade
Pull the cap off of the base of the rear wiper blade assembly using your hand to uncover the 12mm bolt. Remove the 12mm bolt. Place the rag on your car underneath the wiper assembly and use the screwdriver to pry up on the blade until it comes off.
STEP #2: Remove wiper motor
Open your hatch and use the screwdriver as a pry bar to pop off the plastic piece on the hatch that goes around the trunk latch. Once this is removed you should see the rear wiper motor held on by three 12mm bolts. Unclip the wiring harness and remove the 12mm bolts and set the motor aside for when you sell the car.
STEP #3: Plug the hole
Paint your 1" plug to match the color of your car (or whatever other color you want). Once dry, plug the existing hole with it and use automotive grade silicone on the underside of the hatch around the plug to keep water from entering the car. Once this is done, re-install the plastic piece on the inside of the hatch and enjoy.
The plug I used fit so snug that I didn't have to use the silicone. When I get home from work I will post up the brand and size of the plug that I used. It is also really low profile. Some of the guys on My350Z were using sink stoppers and various other things as plugs too. I will also try and post some pics once I get the painted plug in there.
