quits firing

I have a 1985 300zx NA I purchased about 6 months ago and love the car.

recently it has been stalling while driving. With no warning it will quit firing, the rpms read zero (everything else on the dash reads normal). Sometimes if I leave it in gear it will it will jerk a few times and start running normal again, but sometimes it completely dies and after it sits for a while it starts back up with no problem.

I have changed most of the normal tune up stuff and taken apart all of the connections around the coil, cleaned, and added some dielectric. I have wiggled every wire and connection I can see under the hood but none of them make it stall when it is running.

I was going to change the coil since I am pretty sure it is spark related, but was hoping someone might have some experience that would prevent me from randomly changing parts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Welcome to ZDriver!

Check the ecu diagnostic codes... that's the first and easiest thing to do.

Thanks for the help, when it quits running I am getting both:
-Crank Angle Sensor Circuit
-Ignition Signal Missing in Primary Coil

I found a procedure to test the sensor. I would think its most likely the sensor caused the coil code than the other way around. Will be checking it tomorrow.

mos likely cause is the ignitor (power transistor) is flaky. get a can of freeze spray from Radio Shack. next time it dies jump out and freeze the ignitor and see if it starts. if it does there is your problem. why the codes aint much help. but the no signal one indicates ignitor is marginal.
