Z31 has not started in 8 years...
Hi all, I recently inherited an 84 turbo. It had been sitting under a car cover in a heated garage for 8 years and has not been started at all in that time. I wanted to ask, does anybody in here have any tips on where to start? I plan on putting some oil in the cylinders and I think I should drain the gas but dont know how? Any tips from folks on here?
Replace timimg belt
Grats on the new car.
With it sitting that long, Id bet the timing belt might be iffy at best, if you replace it now you will have a base to start your maintenance cycle. Drain and replace all the fluids. Get a timing belt kit with water pump, and all the belts and the little hoses too, then you will be good to go for a long time .... ruffly 65k miles per belt, maybe longer, but why risk it.
Here is a Nissan kit, all you need 60K Timing Belt Kit - 300ZX (Z31) :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com
and I think this hose is inside, and should be replaced at the same time, HOSE-WATER - 300ZX (Z31) 1984-1989 :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com
or this part, which appears the same and was suggested by 88Hybrid http://www.courtesyparts.com/hose-water-p-252191.html

Gas tank & fuel pump
I recently started working on my '86 NA that had been sitting for 3-4 years, and found the gas tank was a MESS! I wasn't getting fuel pressure, and eliminated the filter and the fuel pump relay. Finally realized it was the pump itself.
I started by siphoning the gas almost completely out of the tank through the level gauge mounting flange (under the carpet and foam pad). You will probably be able to see if there's build-up, but my guess is that after 29 years, there will be.
If you see anything at all that makes you think there's a problem, I strongly suggest you drop the tank and do it right. After emptying mine, I found places inside it which were far worse than what I saw from the one opening. I removed the fuel pump and fill neck and was able to get a much better view of most of the internal surfaces. After making sure the gas fumes were gone with an initial water wash, I stuck a small point and shoot in there and got some good pictures.
I've done a preliminary cleaning and will be using the POR-15 system to seal it before installing my new fuel pump and level gauge. Altogether, I'll have about $300 in the job (plus a lot of hours).
Good luck!

I am the original owner of my z and it has sat for at least a 8 years here and there.( house, marrage kids, .. ect) latest stint was about 4 years in a nice garage..non heated though.
I just turn the key and drive.
Mind you do know what all has been done to her over the years as well.
It looks like you may have gotten a well cared for z, so myself...change oil and turn key...enjoy the ride.
