i hope someone can help me ,,i just got a 1980 280zx ,,and i've been trying to fix a lot of little problems ,so far i've been pretty good at it untill now. ,,,problem one i can't figure out why i am not getting power to the a/c compressor??,,and problem two, i found my oxygen sensor diconected and i can't find the lead that goes to it??? please if someone has a picture or a good description of where to find it, i would really apreciate your help...(i do have the chilton book,,but i'm no good with it )

Do you have a wiring diagram? If so, check the AC relays and fuses for the power problem. The O2 wire should just be dangling right there if it's not connected. Have you actually tested for power at the compressor or are you assuming because it's not coming on?

 

well there is no wire no were near the oxygen sensor and the only wiring diagram i have is from the chilton book ,, and i don't know if it's the book or i just can't read it well...so i'm lost ??? and about the compressor ,,,i tested it for power at the lead and i don't get any.. i tested the compressor directly from the battery and it came on everytime (no cold air though)....and all the relays and fuses seem ok....

can u give me a really detail description of where the electrical lead for the 02 sensor comes from,,,it would really help me a lot....once again thank you

 

Well atleast you know your compressor clutch is still good. Maybe a bad wire then or pressure or control switch. Tracing the wires may be your only option. I'll take a look at the O2 sensor wiring in the morning and let you know tomorrow if nobody gets to you in the mean time. I'd do it now but Im out in the sticks with no outdoor lighting or flashlight (not with batteries anyways ).

 

I checked out a wiring diagram for the 80 zx and if you look at your ECU it should be a black wire coming from pin#31. It's the 5th wire over in the bottom row. Its right between a Blue/Red and Light Green/White wire. I don't know if that will be any help to you or not but if you want to try tracing the wire from the ECU then that should help you.

 

I don't know if you solved your missing wire problem yet but I took a look at mine and the O2 wire comes out of the main FI harness at the Intake manifold. It branches out at the same point as the two grounding wires that attach to the intake manifold(right next to each other). All of this is on my 81 however so I don't know how relevant it is to your year or not.
