spam prevention

got an idea from another forum to prevent spam. this sailing forum i just joined doesn't let you pm or start threads until you've had x number of posts. i think it would cut back on the rediculous amount of spam we've been getting if new users had to post 5 times before they could create a new thread. as much as i like the occasional transvestite sex picture collage, it's getting to be a little much

I don't beleive we can do that on this version of VB but may look into it when we get the VB upgrade. I don't know when that will happen as I've been given dates for that which have all been over the calendar from a couple of months ago till the begining of next year. Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah, a lot of the spammers are no longer bots, but man our poor Z31 for sale forum. I wonder why they're getting spammed the most with all these ****** and other worthless spam ads.

I think it is a bot, or a script. It probably drops to a certain number of main forum sections which happens to fall into Z31 all the time.

Same guy, uses the same name but just changes the last letter and keeps reposting. I guess he thinks his users will be banned right away. I dont' always have time so I will often just delete the threads.

O NO, you have any more firewall type tricks?

Out of curiosity, is this a fresh VB or hacked?

The reason I ask is because I'm a moderator over on another VB based forum and a while back we got slammed with spammers like no other. After implementing a few hacks they rarely get by, instead their posts show up in the "Reported Posts" section and automatically get thrown into Mod Q until properly handled. If this isn't something that's been done then I'd highly recommend it (although I'm sure you know that hacks are always a PITA), if this has been done then disregard this post.

: D

Hi,
A while back we were under spam attack on the Zclub.net forum. Most of it seemed to originate from the Eastern block such as Russia,Poland and Eastern Germany.Blocking addresses from those regions reduced the spam posts by about 95%!

I dont' think I have access to IP block. My Admin rights don't go that deep into the programing of this forum.
O NO, Silverhand, Godzilla... those are the guys who can do that. All I can do is keep deleting their posts and banning people

Only current admins can vote for new admins and we don't discuss that topic in threads visible to you non-admin types.

but ya, my powers are only marginally better than a Super Moderator.

i know about us not being able to see the vote, but i have a feeling there isnt enough admins/mods visiting enough to even give the power out....
