i'm sure a new thermostat wouldnt be a bad idea but odds are it probally needed to be flushed and then toss in the oddly hot days they had there when this happened. i remember that....oi it was bad when the house you were in didnt have A/C

Wha-bam! The head is out and will be sent of to machine shop heaven on Monday. Easy as pie, minus the two bottom intake manifold nuts that required me to suspend the head in the air to get to them.

pft... I had to use the engine hoist for 25lbs... weak!

Meh... I'm not doing much performance driving on my way to & from work. A consistent 50mpg is nice though...

True, but I don't trust FWD cars. And I personally hate working on them.

not all FWD cars are bad for daily driving, infact my maxima's drivetrain was pretty awsome, the problem was the engine decided to eat its own bottom end one morning when i came out and started it to go to work.

is this geo motor a 3 valve set up or is it just 2?
the indentations on the tops of the pistons are strange

I dont like FWD for their Torque steer problems (i haven't tried a FWD Nissan yet)

By looking at the head its a 2 valve engine, maybe its dished funny to lower the emissions?

^^^ I'm not sure if you know what torque steer is... It certainly isn't a problem used as a daily driver, and even more certainly not a problem on a 60hp Metro.

A 600hp Honda Civic punching it around a corner at 5mph.... that's a problem.

Niku, yeah it's a 6 valve.

^^^ In a grand prix I got to drive Every time I tried to accelerate out of a turn it would pull into the turn more then what you started to. then when you let off the gas it would jerk back the other way. Is that TQ Steer is?

I thought torque steer was when you'd take off briskly in a FWD car and you'd have to hold on tight to the steering wheel to keep it from jerking out of your hands. I had this problem with both my Eclipse GS-T and my SRT-4.

i thought it was when the wheels start spinning and you cant turn because you have no traction on your front wheels

I got bored

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_steering

"Torque steering is the influence of the engine torque on the steering for some front-wheel drive vehicles. For example, during full acceleration the steering may pull to one side, which may be disturbing to the driver. This either causes a tugging sensation in the steering wheel, or else the car veers from the intended path. As the torque steer effect is directly related to the engine torque capabilities, this problem becomes more and more evident with high output engines with strong torque in the low RPM range.

Torque steering may be confused with steering kickback."

yea thats it, the grand ***** he had must have had a problem because i have never got any torque steer out of any FWD pontiac product.

parents had an 02 1.8T Jetta (for a very short time) and it had a bad torque steer problem, what made it worse was the horrible lag because it would kick in full tilt and shoot you off some place after you started rollin.
it was a problem car any way, it went bye bye after 6 months

I drove a Pulsar for a while. No such thing as torque steer.

Nismo already mentioned it, but the thought of Torque Steer in a metro is pretty hilarious. I really don't mind FWD at all. I kinda hate how it seems like alot of people are starting to become elitist and acting like if it's not RWD or Manual then the car is terrible and not fun. Although I have to admit I got so used to driving my 280ZX in the snow and such that I knew how to handle rwd so that when I was in a van or something that was FWD in the snow it scared me simply because I didn't know what to do as I was used to the other layout.

that's because a pulsar doesn't have a lot of power, I think was what he was trying to get at. It's pretty hard to eliminate torque steer in a front wheel drive car with some low end torque

Yes. The Pulsar (being an SE) had ok power at 5k-7.5K rpm. The car as a whole twisted a lot. The front end and doors would creak as you drove around corners or as you broke or accelerated. Newer Nissan FWD cars were much better.

Just got a call from the machine shop... valves are shot, which is good news because the motor has been burning oil for a long time & I was worried it was the rings. $100 quote and I should have it back tomorrow.

I also read on TeamSwift that before a head job, this guy had 180psi compression & after had 240 & the thing ran like a champ. Mine was also around 180.

240psi? Isn't that 11:1 compression?

Hum... good point. I didn't really ponder on what he said.

Looks like (from google) 240psi would actually be around 16:1 CR. Either I read that post wrong or he's wack.

EDIT:

Yeah... I think he's exaggerating: http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.p...gasket#p336884

I built ours in '07 purely because it spat the head gasket. Compression just before that was still 195psi at 250,000kms. Now it's 240psi as I took 1mm off the head. The six that we have are all between 220-300,000kms which is testimony to how enjoyable and economical they are to drive.
Maybe shaving 1mm raised it that much? Still... 16:1 CR is insane on any street car.

16:1 compression on low octain pump gas! Now that's going to produce some good torque and 90 mpg!
