Apollo's 72' Charger build

Well its time, despite crappy *** wet weather, to get things moving and start the next project. As most of you know I'll be dropping this 440 big block in to a 1972 Dodge Charger. I got the big block back to the garage this weekend and picked up the majority of the tune up parts. Bolt on go-fast parts are in the mail and should be arriving soon. Just have to find a radiator. Here we go again . . .I wish this was my Z with a RB or something similar goin in. Oh well, i'll live vicariously through an old mopar. And now for some pics

And heavy. The heavy duty engine dolly it is sitting on failed. It would barely budge so i had to use the hoist to take some of the weight off it while i pushed it around and in to the garage. My back is not happy

Not surprised. My brother has a 440 sitting in his garage. I half-jokingly said we should drop it in the 240....and he said thats not a good idea because that engine is so heavy it would probably lift the Zs rear end off the ground. Not sure if he was kidding or not....

I wouldn't be surprised. That **** is heavy. Makes me wonder how much of it i will lose, if any, once i strip it down to the bare essentials.

yeah that engine needs a hell of a good clean up make it sparkle and remove all that unnecessary crap so its cleaner. also aluminum heads and removing that bs stuff from the engine will drop a ton of weight.

Burn the 914? You have lost all credibility. One of the best porsches ever made.

A little progress . .

What the deuce was Chrysler thinking? The AC pump alone weighs about 50lbs. You can see a lot more motor now though!

Nice engine! Friend of mine has a Charger too, one of the more unknown ones with white roof, different back and side scoops on both sides of the coupe.

It`s got a tuned 440 BB, 727 automatic and runs very fast and sounds just like a mopar should! Got any pics of urs?

Happy holidays you Z havin bastards. Some progress on the Charger. What a way to spend an afternoon! Good fun, hella greezy, hella skin missing from my knuckles and to top it all off I am gaining my familiarity with American wrench sizes again. I didnt even have one non-metric tool in my toolbox. And now for some pics. . . .

Picked up some parts this weekend. Got some headers and a Holley 750cfm carb. The turn downs you see i had already. Lots more stuff coming. Gotta paint the engine bay this week and relocate the battery to the trunk. Stay tuned

Nah, its going to be a fairly tame build. Edlebrock performer manifold, Holley 750 carb and headers. Plus a sixpack would require all kinds of carb tuning that i dont have the patience to deal with. Cam and heads to come later.

I dont know if its an SE model, but I know its a Charger "Topper". Came with a 318 originally and a nasty canvas top and chrome trim that will be eliminated.

may wanna put the engine in from the bottom, specially if your painting the engine bay. it wont go in without a scratch from the top. the "K" member comes out real easy and then the engine tranny combo bolts to it, then drop the car over top.

I would shady, but i don't have access to a lift for this project. Unless you can figure an efficient way to do it in the garage or driveway using only an engine hoist and floor jack, Im **** outta luck. Im just going to have to be careful and touch up the areas that will most definitely get scratched. The engine bay has a lot of room to work with though, or at least the 318 made it seem like it did.

Shes coming along nicely. Got everything now except for the water pump. Washed the engine and engine bay really well and prepped them for paint. The original blue block paint came off in huge flakes after the pressure solvent wash, so it looks funky but its clean as hell now. I'll be painting the engine bay black with the block getting the good old Mopar orange. Should have the motor together and painted by the end of the week.

Just a test fit . . .
