New PC for meh

Woot.
finally, new PC for meh!!!!
Q6600 Quad Core CPU
Gigabyte Motherboard(here's where i went cheap hehe)
4GB A-Data ram
CoolerMaster CPU Cooler
fresh new fast install of Windows XP Pro.
OMG, i love this thing! So fast compared to ancient machine I replaced.

I immediately installed Comodo firewall and Avast Antivirus.
Now, here's my question, what else do i need software wise? Is there something better firewall, antivirus wise? I used those two cuz they're free.
Suggestions is what i'm seeking here.
Any other good software i should be considering?

of course for a web browser i recommend firefox. they have personally done more for me then most anti virus programs. delete ALL AOL files ASAP, AOL will kill your system.

AVG is another free virus protection that i like, but i can't say that it's any better then what you have. i'd say that you're set protection wise. the guys i know that are best at computers don't have any protection. they're just careful about what they let into their computer. i still have mccaffe though.

I use AVG, PeerGuardian, Spybot, & AdAware.

As for general programs... Photoshop, torrents, CADs, games... the list is endless.

and thats the way it should be but theres stupid people on the internet who acually think they won that free laptop online and click it too.

the most i ever use is Ad Aware for spy ware, every one gets it, its part of browsing the internet.

as for other non threat related utilities i use a program called AusLogics Disk Defrag, its a free disk defrag program that works alot faster than the bulit in windows one

I use Webroot..with Spy Sweeper. Friggin' awesome antivirus program. And I purchased it with my comp last November. Anyway Firefox is good with me...as long as I don't upgrade with 3.0. For some reason..that program sucks.

I would consider downloading HijackThis and doing a scan one a week (along with all your other scans).. It's completely free and it analyzes the running processes on your system for any foreign or malicious programs.

Also, if you want to run torrents I would suggest running a virtual machine and just installing the torrents on there, then transferring any worthwhile (clean) downloads to an external HDD. If you have a windows disk you can just download a Virtual Machine program (search on microsoft.com) and then install windows on the program. This means that if you download a funky virus or something it will tear up your secondary install, your main install will still be cake.

Just my .02

I'll be dropping in from time to time but not really full time like i used to be.
No, not back in Chicago unfortunately. I'm Living in Canada now. I got married this past May and we're pretty much staying in Canada for awhile.
Believe me i'd rather be living back in the USA. We never really had alot of money and with economy the way it is, it's not getting any better let's just say that lol.
So i'm sitting here, wishing i had a Z again.

Turns out you are half right (Spybot sucks too). After 3 days of battling a damn invisible malware that Adaware, Spybot, and AVG could not find, I got this new program "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" and found the problem: a DNSchanger file in my registry.
