350 swaped with stock rear end

never have seen anyone keep the datsun multi link rear end with a v8 swap before but if it works it works

this was at the moltrie swap meet, the guy knew nothing about the car, he just bought it from a shop

do you live in a hole or something? its VERY common to leave the stock rear end in the Z maybe add an LSD or something but the R200 can take the beating and theres nothing wrong with the suspension setup either.

Straight axles are for drag racing and off-roading (they suck for off-roading too).

Straight axles in a sports car = FTMFL. Might as well put some mudders on it too.

Wait... better yet, I think F1 racecars should be fitted w/ solid axles. That would make them handle A LOT better!!!

/sarcasm

the 1st gen rx7 i drove was faster than my zx... or at least thats the way it felt (might have just been the sound of that rotary making me think i was going fast)

its a winters independent quick change, i know what the advantage of having the brakes that close to the diff is, but i cannot put it into words.

1st Gen RX7's were rated at 100hp. If it was faster than your Z, simple math would show that your Z puts out less than 100hp...

Or... it could be that you have no idea what "faster" feels like.

280ZX weight: ~2900lbs

280ZX + 20 more hp, which pulls 400lbs more....

and lets see my 280zx is a 2+2 that adds what 150lbs? GL that would have to add 30lbs at the least, and my box should add 40 lbs... the rx7 had a fully resealed/rebuilt motor and mine is as original as 81 gets, oh did i mention my t-tops?

280ZX weight: ~3150lbs
RX7 weight: ~2500lbs

280ZX + 20 more hp, which pulls 400lbs more....

A 280ZX running correctly should have good torque. An RX-7 with a rebuilt engine still wont' have torque.

I rode in a 1st gen RX7. It was obviously slower than my non turbo Z.

So wait... Solid axles suck in off road applications?
You need to be specific there man.
Or I need to go back to all the axle swaps I have done, and let them know we screwed up.

If I were to build a Baja race rig or rally, I would want independant suspension. Otherwise.. No.
To keep from getting stuck at slow speeds, it solid axle ftw.

On the street? Nah. No thanks.
Drag? Sure.

The Z is light enough that the rear end will not normally see enough torque to cause a problem. Unless you throw slicks into the equation.

iv only seen a handful of people swap to solid rear axles in a z. i guess if all they do is drag race then ok. but other then that it serves no purpose. you loose alot control with you lose your independent suspension. anyway my friend with a 383 in a 280 has a stock rear end in his z. It holds up very well just needs a better gearing 3.364

You rode in one. But was the driver getting on it? I actually drove a first generation '85 RX7. And I will tell you right now. That sucker was friggin' quick man. No joke.....I wanted that car so bad. Heck....I got on that thing..and it was a 5 speed. And I was doing 90 pretty dang fast. And it was comfortable to sit in also. Those rotary engines...are nothing to joke about. They may not have much hp. But those little cars...are quick and light. I have drove one. And ridden in 2 others. They were all pretty fast.

this was my feeling but as soon as you got to 100mph all hp was gone and you were just crawling to gain speed

and the top end of a zx is like 130mph or so... but it takes a while to get there

i left the stock rear suspension as is on zach's car i just built, worked fine, even handled well too. that crazy guy even raced a porsche to 120mph!!! ive lined up against my buddies 1st gen rx7 gsl-se when we were both stock, it was pretty even to 60mph. after i did my motor i won, then he put a 425hp chev in it and it was way faster, but didn't handle nice like a 280 with the chev does.
