URGENT HELP, bizarre ignition problem
I need to fix this before moving cross country. (DC to LA)
Just about every 3rd time I start my car it makes an excrutiating grinding sound. Sounds almost exactly like the sound you make when you try to start a car if it is already on. I turn the key 3-5 times and it keeps doing it. Usually if I just put it in N and switch back to P a couple times, it starts fine. It runs fine once started. I replaced the ignition a few months ago because the key got stuck but the problem is so random I'm not sure if a mechanic will pick it up. Please help!!!!!

Yep. You may be able to get away with replacing the bendix. If it's been doing this for too long, you may need to replace the starter. If it continues to do it, you could damage the flywheel. Mine does the same thing when it's cold outside, but since it's gotten warmer, the problem has gone away for now.
