transmission bolts and plate

so last time i had the tranny out, i'm not positive i got it bolted back up correctly. i've looked for blow ups and things and just can't figure it out for sure. this is going to sound dumb, but.... that big goldish collored plate that goes bewteen the bell housing and the engine... does it go on top of or below the shaft? i have it below now, but honesly, when i took the tranny out the first time, it just fell to the floor with a clatter, and i didn't know where it came from. so if anyone can direct me to a picture clarrifying this or describe the positioning to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

... the plate should go on both the top and the bottom... it should be a complete circle, rendering your question incoherent. Do you only have half the plate?

oh, you mean the plate is one big plate, all the way around? between the engine and the bell housing? the plate i have isn't broken or anything, it's just a plate that goes half way up the bell housing. are there two? are you sure about this for N/A's too? well, i'm sure you are. this sucks.

i'm an idiot. i found it. the upper half was hanging on the locator pins and i just never looked up there last time.

i've run into other trouble though.... my flywheel is spider cracked. i buffed it out pretty nicely, but the cracks stayed. i'm putting it back on for now. i'll just have to add a new flywheel to my list. i'm sure it will last til the summer time.

also, i'm still not sure what has been causing my noise when the clutch is in... i figured i would find my pilot bushing all trashed up, or a broken tooth on the pressure plate, but i've found nothing. i really need to figure out what the problem was before it goes back together. the nose shaft is in fine shape. no grooves or anything like i feared. all the splines are in fine shape. there was always grease where it needed to be. the spider cracks on the flywheel wouldn't cause a noise while the clutch was in because the disk would be off the flywheel at that point. a little maybe. but not on it enough to make this noise. it never made any noise while it was rubbing on take offs. please throw some more ideas out there about what could have been causing an intermediate grinding sound and feel in the clutch pedal when the clutch was in, besides the throw out bearing. that's not it.

um if i were you i would get a new flywheel soon cracking isnt good cracks grow and then pieces break off and a piece of flywheel spinning at 3-6k rpm you figure out the aftemath. could the sound mabe on the little shaft bearing?
btw my clutch makes a little noise when engaged

the noise i'm taking about is a very loud abnormal one.

noticing that the friction surface on the wheel was slanted, i've decided to prolong the job for a week and get the flywheel turned. i hope he'll even do it with those cracks in there. they can't be too deep.

more problems: there is a hole in the crank for a locator pin to go into the flywheel. but, no hole in the flywheel for one.... i don't know. if i put this crap back together and it still makes this noise, i give up on this car. it's going in the river.

there aren't any z32's in yards around here. cost of turning < cost of new wheel. if they won't turn it, i'll be hitting you up. i'll let you know before it goes in the river lol

doing a bit of searching, i've found that replacement is recommended if cracks are more than surface deep, and that very shallow cracks are somewhat common and should just be turned out if possible. so i'll take it to the shop and see what they think. actually, i do have some money coming in next week, so i may be in the market for a lightweight flywheel if this one doesn't work out.

If it's cracked, replace it. Quit cutting corners... this isn't a car that allows that.

if they'll turn out without taking the flywheel out of spec, that's not cutting corners. but like i said, if they are too deep to be turned out, then a Stillen lightweight flywheel will be on the way tomorrow.

on a more positive note.... i pretty much figured out what my fitting problem with the lower plate was. there is a kind of locator thing on the plate, that when all the other bolt holes line up, is just stuck between a flat part on the engine and a flat part on the tranny. so it was just causing a little gap at the bottom of the tranny. after a lot of investigating and finding no purpose for this little raised locator, i ground it off. fitting problem solved!

also, i finally figured out that the little hoses that are part of that useless system that come in halfway down the exhaust pipe between the mani's and the next union, well they are stuck in there, but i found out that the hose pops right off of them. so i was finally able to get those pipes out and drop the tranny easily, and this will make assembly very easy. no write up that i've found said to take them off, so i was just going about the job with them on there... i need to trust my instincts a little more, and the write ups less lol. so that was fun! speaking of write ups though, anyone know where the one for the deletion of that useless system is?

I assume the little hoses you're referring to are the AIV tubes... in which case, there are several writeups on removing them and the entire system.

fawwwk. the flywheel is ruined. the cracks were too deep to mess with. so... recommendations on what to do about a new one? rt, feel like getting a shipping quote on yours? i'll want a picture of it too.

other than that, my budget right now is about $400. i've found a 12.5 lb flywheel that goes for about that, but i'm also considering getting a stock one if i can find it cheap enough. in the 100-200 range. courtsey has them for 260, so that one's out of the question, when i can get one that's half the weight for not too terribly much more. i just won't spend that on a stock one when i've wanted a light weight anyway. suggestions? other light weights that run a little less?

TwinTurbo.NET classifieds... any flywheel will serve your purpose (I have JWT, which is made by Fidanza... didn't we have this conversation before?). You could also call Ultimate Z and Z1 and see if either of them have any used ones in stock (Z1 may have used lightweights).

no zlover, i don't think we had that convo about your flywheel. but maybe. i sent an email to z1 too before i got the email with this offer. i'll see what they have.

And you're assuming it even needs to be replaced. When you get the flywheel, resurface it like I said before and you should be fine. I've gone probably over 50k without replacing the center of my flywheel. $100 is a great deal.

no i wasn't assuming it needs to be replaced. just saying that it had a replaceable surface. but the replaceable inserts can be resurfaced? that is something i wouldn't expect. thanks for mentioning it. yeah i'm really happy that he mentioned it. i just hope he noticed in the thread that it has to be for an N/A
