would putting an extra quart of oil in your car be harmfull enough to damage the pcv valve? i have used nothing but 10/30 mobil 1 EP in my car since i bought it and have always put 5 quarts in it, my idle is at a solid 700 no matter what, the performance still catches me off gaurd sometimes, but overall it has yet to give me any problems, there has been no loss in performance, but anyway i dont think a pcv valve could go out from an extra 1 quart..

It's harmful period. It's probably not harmful directly to the PCV system, but when it causes windage on the crank and your bearings wear out (while you make less power due to more restriction on the crank's rotation), you might wish it only hurt the cheap and [in comparison] easy to replace PCV system.

Unless you track your car A LOT and are worried about the pump not picking up oil in hard cornering, don't put extra oil in; there's a reason Nissan specified the amount of oil.

thats what im afraid of, because there are a few VERY twisty roads near me. and one of my freinds blew his motor because of the oil slosh..

Hmmm.....Nissan designed this great sportscar....for some crazy reason I think they figured that people would drive it like a sportscar should be driven. Like Z Lover said,...use the specified amount of oil.

yeah i agree. if your truly worried just add oil until its closer to the High side of the dip but still in the OK range. and make sure you run the car after the oil change cause it needs to run oil back throught eh system and oil filter. then check the level. but im sure you probly already knew that.

Your friend probably blew his motor because he also didn't have enough oil in it (perhaps it was burning off somewhere). I'm also willing to bet it wasn't a 300ZX.

Trust me, the oil pan and engine were designed to handle spirited driving with 4 and 5/8 quarts of oil... no more. You're not going to blow your engine because of oil slosh on "twisty roads," but you will blow your engine when you suffer low oil pressure from worn bearings because of too much oil.

yea, he owns a little pos jetta thats jerry rigged in every possible way, alright, from now on ill fill it with 4 7/8 quarts from now on, thanks for the replys and advice guys..

NO difference in TT vs. NA capacity (The oil cooler only comes into play on it's removal)

Check your owners manual to be sure, but that's what I got from TTZD/TT.NET.

man, this thread almost screwed me up. i read it a few days ago, and the part where 4 5/8 was said stuck in my mind for some reason. i did my oil today, and was just getting ready to put in the 4th quart, when i thought to myself that didnt sound right. pulled out the manual, and sure enough, i almost put in an extra quart. glad i checked.

Sorry! I've never owned anything other than a 90, and I didn't realize they had a oil capacity drop like that between years... I may have to look into why, because as far as I knew, the oiling systems were identical between years.

Got my answer...

really, though, the quantity of oil you add is irrelevant; fill your oil until it reaches the correct point on the dipstick. Apparently, the extra quart only makes a difference of approximately 3/8 of an inch on the oil level, so as long as you don't overfill, you're all good.

not your fault man. just goes to show, no matter how many times you have done something, and no matter how simple the job is, it's always best to double check. and just for reference, in my '95, i run about 30psi idle, around 60 when i get on it, and thats with 3 5/8 quarts.
