Noisy fuel pump?

Hi everyone! First off, I apologize if this question has already been answered somewhere; I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for. Here's the deal: I have a '90 N/A 5-spd. that seems to have a noisy fuel pump. When I first start the car, until it's warmed up, and when I'm on the throttle more than, say, 10-15% while driving, I hear a high pitched buzzing/whine sound. It's defnitely coming from the hatch area and seems to be the fuel pump. Is this normal? I don't know much about the history of the car as I bought it at 183k with a bad engine and had a 30k mile replacement installed. I would assume the fuel pump has never been replaced but again, not knowing the history I can't say for sure. Any input is appreciated. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems but it is a bit annoying. Thanks guys!

My fuel pump is noisy in the same way. It's been that way since I bought my car two years ago. I don't consider it a problem.

x2, mine's done it for about 2 years now. Only really happens on hot days or under long driving situations.....I don't really see it as a huge problem.

It's likely a sign that the pump is on its way out... how much longer it'll live is uncertain, but try to keep your fuel tank from getting too empty (the pump is fuel cooled, so as long as you keep a decent amount of gas in the car, it should last a bit longer). Be prepared to replace it, but other than the cost of the part, it's a pretty easy job.

some fuel pumps are supposed to make a clicking or whirring sound--prior to ignition, to bring fuel to the injectors. ion some race cars, this initial pump shuts off after the engine is warm and the pump is no longer needed. i am able to hear the fuel pumps on myz31's--not loudly, just distinctly, because i know the sound--do yours keep making more and more noise? or is it consistent and constant?

These engines must be carbeurated, because on a fuel injected engine I don't see how this would be possible considering you need about 35-40psi at idle.

It's pretty constant while I'm on the throttle (and during warm-up; do these cars have a cold-start injector???). It doesn't vary at all in pitch or loudness though, and doesn't *sound* like it's getting worse.

Your pump has two speeds (TTs have 3), it doesn't vary with engine speed. My guess is that your pump is having trouble at its higher speed (the lower speed is for super-low RPMs and idling). Like I said, don't be surprised when it does fail, but there's no telling when that'll be.

Good to know, thanks for the info. So the obvious question- where's the best place to buy a new one?
