So a bit of background info on the events leading up to the strange vibration I'm dealing with. About a month and a half ago I lost control of my car and it slid into a ditch. Only slight body damage and a bent tie-rod, no big deal. I repaired the tie-rod and had the car aligned, everything seemed normal again. For Christmas, I got a set of snow tires for my rear wheels and had them mounted and balanced. I drove the car with the new tires for a few days and didn't notice much difference except they break loose easier than before Anyways, recently my car has had a very strange vibration at around +/- 2000rpm. If I rev the engine in neutral it vibrates, it also does it in gear most notably first and reverse. It feels like it is underneath the car towards the back, not from the engine. I have no idea what it could be, but any advice would be awesome.

 

Does the vibration seem absolutely dependent on the revving or could it just be the right frequencies vibrating something loose? What's it sound like? If it vibrates when you rev in neutral it doesn't make sense to me that it's happening in the back.

 

Well, it only vibrates at around 2000rpm so that would make it rev dependent. It is possible that something is loose and only vibrates at that frequency, but I have no idea what could be loose. It does it in gear and in neutral. I wouldn't say there is a very noticeable sound caused by the vibration itself, but I have noticed a change in sound lately. I figured the change in sound is caused by the new snow tires though. It might not be at the back of the car, but it feels like its underneath the car somewhere which is probably not very helpful.

 

Drive shaft mount?!

 

It does seem like it could be drive shaft related. I'll look into that, thanks.

 

had the same problem it was the center carrier bearings on the drive shaft. easy fix but for a few more buckets you can get a one piece much better and you dont have to replace again

 

I've always wanted a one piece but I don't know how much longer I will have the car and I don't have the money. Can you give me a short explanation of how to fix the carrier bearings?

 

first see if that is the issue. jack up the front end and pull on the shaft back and forth and if it has alot of play than you would need to replace it. but when i say it would be alot better with just replacing it with a one piece. it willonly cost about 40 dollars more

 

Ok I'll look into it. Recently the vibration has been off and on. I might just ignore it if it doesn't come back.

 

just be careful cause i did the same and it was fine for about the first 3 months until i was 200 miles away and on the side of the highway. ended up paying 400 buckets for the tow back. if you cant get a new one than just call around and see if you can get a used one. craigslist always have parts for these. but if you are just looking to change out the bearing here is a step by step.

Shouldn't vibrate in neutral if the shaft or bearing were bad?
