Lurch when A/T shifts from first to second gear

I have a 1990 N/A 2+2 that lurches from first gear to second gear when the engine is cold. After driving for a few minutes, it goes away. I've been to a couple of transmission shops and they say there is no adjustment for this condition and that my transmission probably need to be rebuild. Any ideas?

I have had issues similar to that with my transmission, one thing that fixed alot is that it turned out a bushing was cracked around where the pedal actuates the slave and so not allowing full release of the clutch, although this may sound obvious it was not obvious at all that somthing like that would be causing the problem, so check everything out... i think the bushing was like $1.75 from nissan.

I've read that too much slack in the throttle cable can cause a stumble and a late and hard shift. Looked at ours and there does appear to be too much play so I'm gonna try to adjust it out when I can get to it.

the 300's auto trannys are crap, there is a good chance you might end up scrapping it. How many miles are on your Z?

it only has 88k on it original miles.. i'm the second owner, however after driving it within the first 1000 miles my transmission messed up and wouldn't shift up from second gear. took it to three transmission places. two of them said the trans should be rebuilt, however one said it was a faulty neutral safety switch ( i don't know what that is). anyway, i paid a grand to have that fixed/replaced and it cured the shifting problem but now the lurch from first to second in noticealbe. forgive my mechanical ignorance. i'm doing the best i can to make good decisions but i just don't have the expertise to fix/diagnose this stuff myself. this is why i'm reading through all the posts for advice.

it's tough for me to justify spending 3-4k to have the trans rebuilt when my car blue books at about 6-7k, and while it does have a lurch.. oddly enough it goes away after the car warms up.. i want to add some cheap performance upgrades but again i don't wanna drop thousands of dollars in the car, especially considering my lack of trust in transmission shops and the doubletalk i get from my local nissan dealership.

i have two problems: the lurch as i mentioned and slop in steering at speed. if i could get these two problems resolved i'd be really happy with my z because it's in great shape on the exterior, interior, and has super low miles for a 15yo car. any advice is greatly appreciated!

by the way, i should also mention that i have replaced the faulty bose stereo with an aftermarket system including a powered subwoofer in the back. i have read a couple of threads that say my lack of power and/or lurching could be due to battery/alternator not being able to handle the additional requirements placed on it by the stereo. it has been recommended that a grounding kit might resolve my problem. is this likely?
