lifter replacements

so what are the common thoughts on changing out specific lifters? when i got my heads rebuilt, $3000 had me about maxed out with the whole job, so i found 8 lifters in the heads total that would loose pressure over night, so i pulled them out and replaced them with brand new ones. as soon as i got the car going, and up to the present, there is an intermittent lifter like tic. too loud to be injectors and i can't think of what else it might be. so now that i've decided to go back in and replace the front main seal, i decided to go ahead and pull the cams and replace a few lifters that look/feel the worst. should i be able to feel them leak down over night if i press them in the morning and find that they compress? this is basically what the machinist that did my heads said, but it seems smart to ask on here. what else could be causing this tic if i don't find any lifters that are soft? which i don't think i will find any soft ones cause they were all fine when i put the heads on and the tic started immediately.

My car was run ONE time without premium (to my knowledge, intransition into my ownership from the old owner) and ticked ever since just like your describing.

hmmm. that would suggest a source other than lifters. let me know if you find a fix for it! i was going to be posting up the results of my lifter replacement on here soon, but possible clutch/transmission problems have changed my time/money plans for this christmas break. looks like i'll be working under the car instead of above it. i hate that.

Ticking!!!

I have a tick in my engine and i think it's the lifters. I dont know if it would have anything to do with it but my 300zx has been sitting for a few years. how much should new lifters (good ones) cost?

about $32 a piece as i remember it. +shipping. you don't necessarily need all of them too. but, if you are meticulous and rich, it's best to get all new ones, and new cams, cause new lifters and old cams and the other way around don't agree too well.

Change oil, add a product called "Engine Honey," hop on the highway and punch it. High rpm + heavy load = high oil pressure + air bubbles squeezed out of the lifters.

Advise....if you have to ask how difficult the job is, then you probably shouldn't try it. It's a pretty major job.

Zlover's suggestion sounds like it's more up your alley.

wow, zlover suggesting a cleverly named fluid product that could be classified as an "additive". i never thought i'd see the day!

it's a pretty big job. could be done in somewhere between 1 1/2 days and 2 1/2. i asked someone how hard it was before i did it. and i finished it and more. nothing in it is crazy complicated. you just need to be careful to keep it clean and put stuff back together in the right order.

Engine Honey is just a really thick lubricant. There are additives that work - octane boosters that increase octane (Holley's NOS brand octane booster increases octane by something like 5 points), engine/fuel additives that actually clean things without doing damage (Seafoam), etc. I just don't recommend very many.

yeah that's why i was surprised! i'd just heard you express dislike of them a lot. i don't doubt that there are some good ones.

you heard? from who? i never knew there was a gossip group on zlover..... i can only imagine on what im missing out on. as far as what he has expressed dislike for is usually fuel additives because of the fickle Z injectors though i will agree up to that point, and also the fact that gasoline is a cleaning agent so injectors shouldn't need anything added to them, but gas does have impurities itself and can age/go bad, so its possible seafoam would be helpful, if not for a cleaner, a stabilizer for the fuel so you don't encounter this situation.

yeah that's what i'm saying. i was saying that i read him say it. nobody else told me. i wasn't making any big accusation. it was more of a joking remark.

lifters are one thing that i don't think i'd trust to put in a z if they are used. maybe a honda or something, but not a z. it would cost too much money to fix if they happened to ruin the cams, which may or may not happen.
