I need good advice
I have a 93Z NA auto. I have done research on the 5 speed tranny swap, and all I keep hearing is that it is expensive. Can anyone give me a ball park figure on how much it is going to cost, or know of anyone that has had it done. I have already been twin turbo site but I did not see a price. I also would like to talk to someone who has had it done to see if there where any problems with maintenace and so forth. The only reason I want to do this is because I don't want to to buy someone elses problems thats why I want to try to keep my baby and just modify her.

Re: I need good advice
Lets see to get a good rebuilt tranny I paid $900 for it. Then you will be needing all the linkage and speed meter that is about $300 for that. Plus the manual is shorter then the auto so a new front half shaft or drive shaft can't say how much that is. I replaced mine with a one piece. Then you have the labor cost which may be $2-300 or more depending on area and shop experience. Oh I forgot the pedal and the linkage for that it may run you a few more hundred too. So roughly you may spend about $2000 for the swap maybe more maybe less.

Dont forget a flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate, slave cylinder, throw-out bearing, basically anything you can find on courtesyparts.com that involves the clutch. Around another $1000 with what was listed below. And a helluva lot more labor than JpecZ32 mentioned; to remove the old auto and install ALL of the MANY the new parts needed. I would estimate $6-$8K for the entire job.

Re: I need good advice
Oh I forgot to mention mine was already done but I am having to swap missions because of someone elses cheap A**.plus the dollar to Yen rate is also different so I am ending up paying less for labor and parts. But I also realize you are still paying about $28/hr for labor. Yes I did forget to add some parts in there gomen. But I think $6-8k is a little much for a mission swap, if that is the case get a new car because the blue book for the car is only $10,000 something. Don't get me wrong I love the Z as much as anyone, but there does come a point when the price of a modification becomes questionable.

Thats is why there are so few tranny swaps is because the labor is insane. Labor is anywhere from $40/hr (where I live and you DON'T want to go to these places) to $85/hr at the dealer. But seriously I've heard $6k to $8K estimates unless you can DIY which would make it MUCH cheaper.

OUCH!! that got to hurt of course I have not been in the states for awhile didn't realize the labor cost have gone up. I always knew the dealers where rip off artists but 85 bones! If you really want to do the swap get a friend that is a certified mechanic and have him help you swap it. I agree with stl300z on the DIY instead of paying that much labor.

Re: I need good advice
you could always get a tougher auto from level 10. that might be easier. but i guess if you really want a manual, then you might just have to get a new car. damn that sucks. i just thought that id suggest the level 10 atuo, ive heard good things about it.

Around $3500. Z1 motorsports will do the swap for you with everything except a new clutch and flywheel for around $3000. Contact Russell at zxparts@mindspring.com

when i was lookin for my Z the dude sellin it to me was a mechanic and he said he'll convert it for 600 dollars..i was about to get it but then people told me to just get a Z thats already a manual..its better. and if u end up spending 6-8k you might as well find a good deal on a manual Z somewhere...sell yours and get a new one..
