High Idle
I have a standard "96" NA with no upgrades. Car runs fine except that once engine is warm when i come to stop, the idle will remain high around 1500. Sometimes it will gradually return to normal 800 - 900, other times it stays at 1500. If I pump the gas a bit, it always returns to 800 - 900 range. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I might have looked at?

I don't know what could cause that, but I believe the NA's idle shouuld be at about 750. Go read this thread on the idle screw:

And maybe this one too:

Maybe those will help in some ways.

Let me know what you guys find. I've been chasing an intermittent high idle problem myself. It'll idle real high when cold (1400-1800). 1400 is normal for cold start, but when I start to pull forward or backward, if I let off the gas, it shoots to 1800, or higher. Warm/hot running is better. It hovers between 900-1200, but it's still too high. I'm waiting to fix my aux air valves and replace the O2 sensors before I start playing with the idle control valve.

Here, maybe these will help too:

Go through this to check up on your idle and have fun!

Mine does the same thing, but it isn't normal. I speculate that I have a vacuum leak on both sides of the car in the tubing that runs from the air fliter , back into the engine compartment. I haven't had a chance to get under the car and research it further. The reason I think this is because when I cleaned my air filter, I noticed those tubes were loose. Hopefully I can do something with it this weekend or next. I'll let you know.

OK guys, I went through and tightened everything between the the MAF (happy EMO?) and the idle didn't change. There is only one more place where there could be a vacuum, and that is at the intake pipe before the turbo. When I replace the clutch, I should be able to get to that quite easily. I did adjust the idle screw. It took 2.5 clockwise turns to get the idle down to 700, but the key is that the idle is now where it's supposed to be. .

Hey, come on, don't burst my bubble. I'm basing my comment of "no more vacuum leaks" on the fact that my idle drops down to 700ish quite quickly. If there was a vacuum leak, the idle would drop much more slowly.

ohh, gotcha. I was just giving you another option of what could be going on. I mean, if you tighten everything including the intake pipes near the turbos and it stilll doesn't fix it, it could be like what I said earlier. I'm just looking out for u.
