Help

K, so Im in the middle of a motor swap, went to do the timing belt, aligned all 4 cam sprockets, but the crankshaft sprocket will only do about a quarter of a turn before it sounds like its hitting something going in both directions. What could that possibly be? thanks

the marks on each of 5 sprockets are lined up perfectly with 5 marks on the belt? don't turn it too hard. it's almost definitely valves hitting pistons. the problem is also almost definitely the belt not being aligned right. you will have to send me a picture to convince me that it is

or... are you saying that the crank is completely off (degree wise) and you did the 4 cams first? let the cams sit with the marks up, then get the crank on TDC, then align the cams. they shouldn't need to turn far

that was my first thought. The cam sprockets are aligned with the dots; however, I can't turn the crank to match the marks. Possible dropped valve?

You have to align the crank first, then the cams. It sounds to me that it's stuck with a couple pistons that are trying to go up when other valves are down... so turn the cams so that all the valves are closed, turn the crank to where it needs to be, and then align the cams.

ouch... been there done that... well my dad actually. had to rebuild the head AGAIN hope you didnt mash up your valves. any imperfections can cause bad seals and the slightest gap that allows compression to escape WILL and quickly. hope you were turning it very gently.

Well I bought the motor with my credit card, so I have replacement insurance, would that just be the best route to go and order another one?

did you buy this motor used? and i assume you have done work on it since you got it.

i think you should check your replacement insurance policy. i have a feeling it won't cover something like that.

... I have a feeling that, unless you were cranking the sh*t out of the crank, you didn't do any damage. Just turning it and having it collide with the valves won't do anything unless it's turned hard.

idk ^^^^ though i wont say they bend easily valves come down at angles so the piston would only hit one small corner of the valve making it easier to do damage, but still, it would take some grunt or a quick turn into a valve mash to hurt them. not like they are made of gold or glass or something.

There are a few tricks to putting on the belt

Get everything pretty close first (use method listed above)

line up the crank now turn it about 2mm counter clockwise

line up the exhaust and intake cams on the drivers side of the engine similarly 2mm counterclockwise or "before" the marks

Now here's the silly part

line up the passenger side cams a full tooth past the marks or 1 tooth clockwise past the marks

slowly tighten the auto tensioner's tension bolt until its about 2-3mm from being fully in or flush.

put the auto tensioner on using just the pivot bolt

Run the belt through the idlers/pulleys/cams and crank being very careful not to change the position of any of the cams

push the tensioner over and put in the two other bolts that affix it to the block
with your breaker bar and socket on the crank turn the crank the 2mm so now the markers line up.

using a long extension lever the tensioner so the passenger side cams are pulled back to where the marks line up (tighten the 2 bolts and the pivot nut)
remove the tensioner's tension bolt

stand back and be amazed, you are done.

How can it be a "new rebuilt" motor?... it's either new or rebuilt. Perhaps you mean "rebuilt motor ordered today" or "freshly rebuilt motor ordered today," but it's certainly not new if it's rebuilt. (Just for future reference.)

perhaps

he meant faux post modern vintage

or most likely he ment opposed to the old one he is going to send back and now he is getting a new rebuilt one as in new to him. But by all means jump all over him for not being 100% clear. Wouldn't be the first time.

I'm just trying to help people be more proper and precise, you can have all the problems you want with that. People didn't much like Socrates either...

Here is me being precise and proper

The wheels on your Z look like old, early 90's style crap. Now you know there is a difference between being precise and being mean or spiteful. Perhaps it's tact you should learn unless you are too busy trying to "teach" everyone else. <--- me being precise

And they didn't like Socrates cause he buggered little boys...is that really the person you want to compare yourself to? <--- me being proper

LOL

You're a moron, and clearly know nothing of ancient Philosophy. Socrates was tried and sentenced for detracting from belief in the Greek gods.

And I'm not going to bother responding to your bullshit anymore. All that you seem to type is useless crap that doesn't help anyone. The forum is a better, more helpful, more intelligent place when you're not around, so please leave and don't come back.

socrates stood in the town square and waited for people to come and try to prove themselves by challenging him. take a philosophy class you learn alot about that.
