Engine ID

Just bought a 91 TT.
16 miles from place of purchase, a rod went through the block. Bought a Japanese imported engine. So the question is how does one ID the year of the Engine?

Features. Cam gears, heads, injectors, etc.

But why does it matter? As long as it's not a 96, you should be doing a 60k kit and using all the pertinent parts from your engine to put it in your car.

As long as parts from the 90 to 95 are the same, it will not matter. Planning on changing the timing belt along with the water pump. Most cars that I've owned were old and slow compared to the Z. Just want to take my time and do things right.
Thanks
Al
