desperate for technical advice
Hey every one just joined the site and anxious to get some advice.I joined this forum strictly for engine info as i do not have a z32 or any 300 zx for that matter, however i do have a vg30dett from a 91 japanese car installed in my 78 datsun 280z.I am far from getting it running at this point and i have been trying to find some people willing to help me out.I did not get a complete car just the motor so i am very hazy about some issues.Mainly what i need to find out is exactly what i can eliminate as far as vacuum lines and emmission controls without causing my self too many problems in the future.I wont say that i am totaly farmiliar with the motor but have done a lot of research over the past year or so,one thing i do know is that the motor is frigin' sweet.I plan on taking the motor back out again to finish underhood jobs and i want to do everything i can to the motor while it is out as some things are hard to get at when installed.I have been told about an egr bypass to eliminate that function but im wondering if i can pull the whole system without serious problems, will this require ecu mods? as there are a number of sensors involved with the system.I am planning to invest in a romulator tuning setup as well as a consult machine to aid in eliminating problems for myself. You all know as well as i do that upon the initial turn of the key i will be dissapointed so i want to be able start the process of elimination quickly and easily which is why i initially thought staying as stock as possible would be a good idea to start now im thinking differently, any help is much appreciated,Including pics as well.

have you checked and prepared for fitment issues? the vg engine in an s30 is a VERY tight fit. i believe some modification is necessary to make it fit.
as far as bypasses go
dont install a carbon canister
egr delete(needs ecu reflash also) i believe they have the egr plugs at COZ. if not, search for it tt.net. theyre made by yugo bernie
aiv delete(since you have just the motor, just an ecu reflash is needed)
coolant bypass(here)
swap out your pcvs for catch cans(here)
also, if you havent been to hybridz.org, sign up there. there are people there who have done this swap. they will be able to help you more than we will

I am a member of hybrid z also, not many ive talked to have done the swap or a least they havnt come out, although many are interested. As far as the fitment it is fine i made custom mounts which i plan to sell at some point. And it really is not as tight of a fit as some might say,it actually seems less cluttered than in the car it came out of,plenty of room for turbos, plenty of rear clearanc and since the engine sits behind the strut towers there is almost too much room in the front. The only real problem was making room for the starter and the fact i have to fab my own downpipe for the pass side, even this wasnt really a problem.

Eliminate the AIV, like B said. Other than that, you should look to keep as much as possible. If you're not familiar with the engine, then you should really read up on it. There's a lot to it.
