Coolant smell inside car
Re: Coolant smell inside car
I have a 1990 NA Z32 with similar symptoms. I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot this occurrence but I'm hoping that our heater cores aren't leaking. Have you ever experienced overheating or observed any temperature changes? I haven't but I noticed the smell after I replaced my corroded stock mufflers a week after I bought my car. I've had my car for less than a month so I'm not sure if such an odor is normal. It puts a weight on my shoulders so I'm constantly watching my temperature gauge. My coolant overflow tank has kept a consistant level cancelling out the idea of any lost coolant or overheating/boilover issues.
If anyone else has this odor intermittantly please respond so we don't feel like we're the only ones that have this problem.
Thanks.

Re: Coolant smell inside car
I just bought this car last Sunday and the owner said the car was getting hot so he had a shop replace all coolant hoses because there was a leak but he said he didn't notice the smell, although the coolant tank and radiator levels are fine. Therefore, my guess was it could be the heater core also but I hope not. Anyway I hoping someone out there could help us with this problem. Thanks.

Re: Coolant smell inside car
just b/c your fluid levels are fine doesn't mean your rad or thermostat are working properly. Might need to fluch the system or clean leaves and debris from the front and back of radiator. I have seen this on 4 Z32's now since the front of the car will let stuff in easily. Take the whole rad out and inspect it.
As for the coolant smell inside feel your carpet and see if it is wet anywhere under the dash. If so then it is the heater core. If you remove the dash it is easier to change. This isn't a job for someone with little experience. Goodluck.
