Restoring a 1-owner, 1989 z32

First post here, and completely new to z32 maintenance but not cars. I’m quite active in the Mini Cooper forums, it’s been more my toy of choice.

I have a 60k km Canadian model of a 2+2, from 1989. Completely stock, pre-airbags. We got it before most dealers, I think it was the 66th off the production line. I have great family memories with it. It’s a little tired looking at the moment and I’m pretty ocd.

The exterior needs a new paint job, the grey trims and seals coold be replaced. The front drivers seat needs need upholstery (guess at which point you’d do the passenger too).

Mechanically it’s in great shape. I’m terms of age, I don’t know what to expect I need to have serviced or replaced. Do I need bushings , timing belt or serpentine belt? Any critical engine components that die with age?

I figure a repaint (it’s red) would be about $4000 Canadian. New front upholstery maybe $2000. Can I find replacement exterior trim pieces? I’d love a replacement oem Bose head unit. We dropped an aftermarket one in when it crapped out.

Short story long, I don’t want to drop a ton on it. Its easy to fall down the rabbit hole. It’s more of a summer weekend toy I’d like to share with my kids. I’d like to restoring to its former glory. Where do I start and what is this going to cost me?

Ill get pictures…I know these posts are meaningless without them
