I need some advice from the veterns
I'm thinking of purchasing a 300zx as a project car of mine. I can get the full car with minimal problems with one exception. There's no engine. The engine that was in there died. I can get the car for $4000.
My idea is to get the car, than purchase a brand new engine, than purchase the Twin Turbo stage 5. I've been doing a little research but not much has led me to prices. Is this a good idea and will over all be better in the end, or am I better off buying an perfect running stock 300zxTT?

Thing looks pretty good. So, you can get an NA roller for $4k. Eventhough it has a lot of extras, $4k may be a bit steep for something with no motor. It really depends on whether or not you really like the color and body kit. You could buy a TT front clip; which would have pretty much everything you need in the engine compartment. It would make it easier to do the work on the engine to take it to stage 5 with the engine being out of the car. There are a couple other guys who know quite a bit about this stuff also. Z Wrecker, NISMO LMR and Rizzspeed. I'm sure they'll chime in shortly.

It's something I'd do over time, so putting the TT one the engine before putting is no problem. I'd have to save up and purcahse each at a time. I don't want orange, but I can easily get that painted and the body kit looks fine to me.
Also, if anyone has links to online stores where I can get prices of a replacement engine, because I can't find anything.

THeres a few options you have. You can wait around and look for a great deal on a TT. I got mine for $7500 with 103K mi and no major problems and some goodies. I waited and looked for an entire year. I also waited for this guy to lower his price..he was desperate. Or you could buy the NA (looks clean) and do a TT swap. You could buy the front clip, best way to go, hands down. Will have everyhting you need and if you just buy an engine/trans/ecu, you'll always have to go buy things that didn't come with it and it will add up quickly. Also, if you buy a jdm motor, rebuild it first. They are hit or miss. Some have been sitting up to 10 yrs and can be quite problematic. Do all of the upgrades before putting the engine in the car--it will be much easier this way. Expect this to take you a LONG time and a lot of hard work and problem solving. One more option you have is to buy a clip and get a shop to do it for you and build it for you (i.e., SGP). Here's some techs that might help as far as the TT swap.

Ok, I can help you here. VG30DETT, in stock ready to ship. Well talk prices if your serious. I personally dont think a shell is worth 4g unless its got some KICKARSE parts on the body. But if you are serious, shoot me up at NISMOLMR@aol.com... Peace foo's
If you'd like some more info, look at the sticky at the top of the general forum.
Personally, I don't think a shell is worth 4 grand. I think the guys stupid for not buying another engine. Especially since N/A engines are really cheap, considering all the na to tt swaps going on.
I think you'll enjoy building your own Z from scratch rather than picking up where someone else left off. That's just what I think...

i agree....4K for the shell is a lot of money+ you said you are not too crazy about the paint job, so thats gonna be at least 2k to repaint. i would look around, and if just a shell is what you are looking for you can find that for about 1500 or so, but if you wanna a running car, wait a little bit, do some research and you'll find one cheap. whatever you do, keep us updated, and welcome. from now on this car is where most of your income will go
4G's is awfully expensive for that car. I'd say get a shell for cheaper, and then do your thing if you wanna go that route. 2200 from nismo is a much better price. Shop around as well, I'll think you'll be suprised at what you can find if you're patient enough.
Yea man, I seriously cant do that project anymore. Its not that I cant do it, its that I dont have the time anymore. Two AP course's, Lacrosse has started up, and now I have a job. I dont have the equipment anymore, I dont have the facilities anymore. So its just chilling in the driveway. BUY IT! Peace foo's
Just selling the whole thing. I only have use of the facilities during the summer. Its used for a school during the year. So im in a tough spot. Need to get rid of it. 2200 takes the cake. Peace foo's
I answered, my brother, friends etc. The owner of the shop picks me and his cousin up to go to the shop. The next two weeks will decide the future of Redbird. If I can make ONE Skyline sale, it will change it all around. That will make the difference between it becoming a junk car... Or a VG30DETT powered BlackBeast. Well see. Peace foo's
