i can't think of any black tubing associated with the EGR... you are probably talking about the balance tube or the intake hoses, and those should be fixed if dented.

as for the EGR, it's a relatively hard job, and you should do some reading on it before you do it, but it doesn't hurt anything to take it off, and it probably does some good to.

Pros & cons vary depending on who you are talking to... a die hard tuner, or a state emissions official.

Welcome to ZDriver! Hope ya stick around.

Black tubing? Are you talking about the balance tube? That has nothing to do with the EGR valve.

The EGR valve has 3 tubes - one that goes to the driver's side exhaust manifold and two brass-colored tubes that go to the underside of the plenum (one on each side). None of them are tubes you'd encounter on a spark plug job.

But to answer the initial question anyway, the EGR valve should be removed. There are hardly any downsides to removing it, and a malfunctioning one can cause havoc. But I don't think you're referring to the EGR valve (which you can't even really see with the fully assembled engine in the car).

balance tube keeps equal amounts of air going into each side of the engine, and acts for a distributor of air for the idle control. a couple of other things tie into it too.

i fixed one of those springs one time. i don't quite remember how i did it. i think i used a carbon contact and the spring out of the top of a TR6 distributor cap. it was an amazing fit. but maybe i ended up using the old spring. i don't know. try re-bending your old one. but obviously the best way is to find a parts car or a bad coil pack and just get a new spring out of that. or if you can find good used coil packs, they are always good to have.

Since no one has said it, do not remove the balance tube.

Well, if one were to cap the openings and then re-route some vacuum lines to other locations, it could be made to run... but it's there to regulate airflow between the left and right banks, so it could cause overall poor air/fuel mixtures between banks.
