Bad Idea? Probably.

Ok well This is pissing me off a little. The old owner of this Z I've been working on, installed a TT into a N/A 2+2.
Well They used the stock efi harness for the N/A so the Z is stuck at 6PSI Ontop of that they poorly installed a front mount IC and When I took the engine out I had to remove the IC pipes. Now I cant get them back in and I'm VERY temped to just feed the turbo out right into the intake with no IC
Other then a loss of HP will that ruin the engine? If not I'm probably gonna do that. as it honestly looks like that got a random IC then they hacked away part of the front frame to make room for the press bent exhaust pipes for IC piping. (hell they even took a chunk out of the back of one of the turn signals!)

You WILL blow your engine in time if you run without intercoolers. You are vastly underestimating the effectiveness of such a device on the Z32 - a good intercooler will cut down intake temperatures by over 100 degrees. (Data in my intercooler writeup - https://www.zdriver.com/forums/300zx-z32-tech-tips-273/intercooler-writeup-long-19694/... look at the temperature differences between stock and aftermarket intercoolers. Imagine not having one at all.)
Get sidemounts.

He didnt buy the IC. Ugh **** I hate this car its EXTREMELY jerry rigged I'm shocked the piece of **** even ran before he got it! N/A harness thats be spliced into so many times, and piece of **** alarm system that didn't even work, a shitty boost gauge that always read -10 no matter what. a ****ed up TT engine a blown auto (now a 5 speed) and theres oil coming from the passenger turbo.
And so far. I really hate Z32s. Very poor design IMO.

It's actually the most advanced design of any Z, and to have everything fit together as it does is a marvel of engineering, you just happened to accept a project that was way out of your league.
I have no trouble working on it.
And by your logic, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferreris, etc are all retarded designs, too, right? Because some of them require engine removal for the most mundane repairs...
Stick to your domestics and classics if you're not comfortable with compact engineering.

Anyways This isnt my Z, I'm working on it for my friend. And I shouldn't talk down to much about it as I have worked on an N/A 300ZX and its not TOOOO bad to work on. Tho the Maintenance for the engine is the most annoying part about it for me. Having to remove like the entire top half of the engine just to get to a stupid knock sensor?

Now that I have this vital tool, and have actually LEARNED THINGS (not saying you guys haven't learned anything, I'm just saying), I can do an NA to NA swap in < 4 hours (not counting if it has a stock exhaust still on that is 15+ years old that usually requires old ruty bolt cutting to get it off, but I have the proper tools for that now....)
and asking if you can run without an IC is like asking if you can run without an oil cooler, which that question was posed to me by a local Z32 owner and I put it like this... Would you put your oil in the microwave before you put it in a car and ran it....... same situation basically....
sorry for the rant, to sum it up, yes it's a bad idea...
also, you don't have to remove the top half of the engine to get to the knock sensor, basically only the UPPER intake manifold (plenum)... you can get to the knock sensor after that with the right tools...

Ok ok ok.
Oh did I say someone already bypassed the oil cooler on this Z as well? Cuz they did sense before the current owner got the car.
Anyways for now I'll put back the IC piping I still cant believe they used exhaust piping tho. And will an aftermarket autotranny oil cooler work or would that probably be to small? I remember he let me drive the thing and I had to pull over like every half hour just to let the damn thing cool down as it would nearly always hit the red.

Thats a turbo for ya! honestly Ill swap it over to a n/a. Name me one company from 79-09 that had a dependable turbo. Just a time bomb waiting to blow at the worst possible time. That and were talking what 8-9 psi ? 20-40 hp???
the z32 isn't necessarily hard to work on, but it is hard to figure out how to fix it and upgrade it properly. you can't just bolt a turbo on it like it's a honda. but i basically learned most of what i know about working on cars with the z32, at age 17. f-ing fantastic car. people say what you want about it but i'll do whatever i can to have one for the rest of my life
And with the list of reliable turbo cars, add Porsche, Ferrari, Bugatti, Mercedes, BMW, etc.
