Gauging interest for angeleyes...
Gauging interest for angeleyes...
I found decent suppliers for all the parts I need to make the angeleyes (I had trouble finding someone who sells just the acrylic rods, but I finally found a place that carries them individually). So now I need to know who's interested so I can determine if I should actually make them or not.
They'd be available in White, Red, and Blue (Red and Blue would NOT be street legal, technically). I might be able to do Green as a special request.
Basic package: I'm thinking the rings with LED's, resistors, and NO wiring at all would be $35 + shipping (which could be a padded envelope so it wouldn't cost much to ship). I'd include instructions on: how to remove the headlights without removing the fascia (per TT.NET writeup, which is a little vague but I'll try to elaborate for you), disassembling the headlights, mounting the angeleyes, and a short writeup on running the wiring (since different people will wire different types of switches, I'll leave that stuff to you). This package will require some electrical skill, as the resistors must be soldered IN LINE with the LED's (I'd solder them straight to the LED's for you, but with how the wires have to run inside the headlight, it'll never look like it should, so you'll need to cut a wire and solder the resistors somewhere along the wires to your convenience, which I'll also provide instructions for), and you must also solder the wires to the LED's. This modification does require drilling one hole into the inside of each headlight housing to run wires (if you drill where I recommend to drill, no one will ever see it); that's the only irrepairable piece if you were to decide to remove the headlights.
Mid-level package: This will include everything but the headlights. The rings with LED's of your choice, resistors, wiring, switch of your choice, and all the instructions you'll need for installing it in your own headlights. Just like with package A, you'll have to run all the wiring yourself and solder in the resistors, but this package comes with everything you'll need (except tools) to install it. This would cost approximately $45 + shipping (and again, shipping wouldn't be expensive as all the pieces are small.
Full package with core: I currently have a pair of extra headlights that I'm willing to use as a core. The lens on the drivers side headlight has a chip on one of the "nipples" but they are great looking other than that (and if you wanted to work a deal where you swap your good lens, that might be able to be arranged). With these, I can mount the angeleyes and run the wiring to the outside of the headlight and solder on the resistors for you, all you'd have to do is install the headlights and run the wiring to your switch. This package would probably be $290 + shipping with a $165 core (semi-negotiable, since I know what the headlights cost to replace, and the variable is my labor to do the install). This will include the headlights ready for install, I'll provide a switch (I'll have a few different ones for you to choose), and a length of wiring that should be suitable for the purpose. Pretty much all you'd need with this kit is the tools and know-how to install it. Core would need to be returned as soon as possible so that I may use the headlights for the next customer!!!
So right now, I just need to know if this is at all beneficial to me to make the angeleyes. If anyone is seriously interested in buying these within the next week or two (or even within the month really), e-mail me at Rocdahous1@aol.com or respond in here and let me know. Even if I don't get enough people to make a lot of them, I'm still willing to do it for individuals just to help them out. If you want something not detailed in one of the packages, just ask and I'll figure out how much it'll cost to do it. ALL PRICES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!!

I would like to add myself to your list for a midlevel package
,I been thinkin about doing this, but dont have the time to track down all the individual pieces and such...
as for red and blue not being legal, blue is legal in california (where i live)... I believe the only color of lamps that are illegal are forward facing red lamps. I read it once on the DMV website. I would want the blue ones

the warning about it not being street legal was just a heads up, that wouldn't stop me from making them either way.
And due to popular request, I'm going to try to reduce the size of the gap in the ring. I'll have new pics within the next two days of the rings with a smaller gap (if I can manage it)
that's true about tt.net. I'm not really a fan of the community on tt.net, it's just big that's all. Everyone's got a pissing contest and stuff, but that's another story. On antoehr note, good luck.....and you already posted a pic of your car with angel eyes on there...I saw that!

look who posted it, and look at my response (lol)
about the gap... there is ALWAYS going to be a gap, there's no way around it (for some reason, 3zc thinks that it's easy to get rid of). Even BMW's have the gap from the factory.
on a BMW...

aftermarket options that sell for $50 to $150 (no joking)

these are selling for $115

considering the size of my gap (smaller than the ones in some of the $100 options, and smaller than the gaps on OEM BMW's), the price I'm asking, and the fact that it's the ONLY kit that fits the Z32, I think I have one of the best products out there...
haha, I stand corrected. I just remembered seeing it on there. About the angeleyes, I would agree with zlover...His kits are extremely reasonably priced. I can personally tell that he's not looking for a huge profit like a lot of vendors(cough*stillen) but just wants to help out the z community some.
if the rings are already made (which is really the most tedious part) and you have to put them in the headlight yourself, probably 2-3 hours (maybe more if you're not that mechanically inclined).
This includes:
removing the headlights (might take an hour finding the bolts and nuts for the first time)
disassembling the headlights (maybe 30 minutes total with a good heat gun and a flathead)
drilling the holes and mounting the angeleyes (maybe 10 minutes)
reinstalling the headlights (20 minutes now that you know where to look for the fasteners)
running all the wiring in the engine bay (probably 10 minutes for a well hiden job, less if you're not concerned with stealth)
soldering (5 minutes total if you're good at it, no more than 15 minutes)
and then running the positive wire to a switch somewhere (dependent on where you put the switch, how well you hide everything, and how good you are at disassembling things and finding somewhere to go through the firewall)
with the pre-made headlights, it's just removing the old headlights, installing the ones I send you, and running your wiring to the switch, so probably less than 2 hours

here's the best I could do with the gap... (the rings are not secured to the housing in these pictures, I just put it in and took pictures... I'm trying to find the best way to secure them so they won't separate under the heat of the headlights)

it took much longer to do it this way because of the fact that the length of the ring needs to be excact, and that also required a different method of securing the LED's (and even making the ring, since I previously did it around the base of a tin can and I can't find a single thing that's the exact inner diameter that I needed... if I ever find something the exact size I need, or if I make something for this purpose, it'll go much faster.)
so what's the verdict?

Hey great job zlover looks very clean even with the gap from before. I will ask some fellow z'ers if there interested. You should call come z shops and ask them to work out a deal and put on some of there websites, doesnt hurt to try.
thanks for the compliments, but I don't want to go that far with the angel eyes. They're not easy to make (well, they're easy to make, but definately not easy to make look right), and I can't commit hours and hours every day to making the rings, drilling them out enough for LED's, soldering wires to the LED's and putting them in, etc etc etc. I just want to help out a few Z owners who have wanted to do this for a while and leave it at that.
In fact, after I sell a few sets, I'll probably stop advertising (I'll still make them, but I won't openly advertise the service - if someone were to ask me to do it, I would).

I'd be interested in white or green ( can u do green?). What do the blue ones and such look like with the head lights on? (PS, how'd u get your fogtlights on, but not the headlights in that one picture?)
the foglights without the headlights is a rewire job at the relays under the hood, I'll see if I can find the writeup for you.
With the headlights on, you really can't see the color in the angel eyes. The light from the headlights entirely eclipses it (again, just like a Bimmer).
Yes, I suppose I can do green; PM me or e-mail me, I'll be working on sets for the rest of the week and through the weekend, I'd probably be able to ship a set of green ones on Monday.

The proper writeup was from another website, like I said, I'll try to find it.
here's one way to do it
http://www.marsavius.net/zippin/ztech/flrt/flrt.html
I don't think that's the way I did it (mine aren't driving lights, the parking lights have to be on for the fogs to work), but it should do somewhat the same thing.
