Unhappy Transmission help!

Hello everyone. It has been quite a while since my last post here but here I am again, in need of help. I don't know alot about the mechanics of cars in general but I do know enough to tell at least when something is going wrong So my situation is that this past weekend I went out for a couple days with a few friends to stay in a cabin my friends dad owns. It was out in a rather mountainous area so I ended up driving a good number of miles up some steep inclines.

During one of my trips out I was driving with a full load ( I've got an 86 non-turbo MT 2+2) and as I was going up one of the many hills I shifted into 3rd gear. After a little bit of time in that gear I noticed it started making a high pitched sound. So I pulled off the road and opened my hood to see what was wrong and I could see a small amount of smoke. I let it cool off and was able to make it home in one piece but now I'm really concerned becuase something just sounds different when I shift into 3rd gear at lower speeds.

I haven't done/had an tranny work on my Z but I was wondering what the problem might be? And perhaps some possible solutions? I've never changed my transmission fluid before and was thinking now is a good time that I look into doing so. I'm a bit lost though, could someone tell me the proper way to go about changing the transmission fluid on my Z ? Or at least guide me in the proper direction. I'm rather nervous that my car is "going downhill" on me and don't want to let it go seeing as how its my only way to get from school/work. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Happy holidays and happy driving your Z's!

Hmm...well thanks for the offer but sadly I'm not sure how to work on transmissions myself. But to answer your question I'm near Corona, between Tyler and McKinley.

Mnn..I've got good friend who lives just off of Perris blvd. Driven my Z out there many times already, good old Cajalco expressway :P.

Anyways, thanks alot for the reassurance. I don't know if I'll need a new transmission, but I'll definitely consider it if its really as simple as you guys make it out to sound. I'm always open to more advice. I figure I'm going to attempt to change my transmission fluid soon. Any reccommendations on how to go about that ?
