Re: Transmission for an '87
I bought one from a japanese wrecking yard for $350.00, it turned out it was wooped. (also I have an 86 300zx and the trans that I got from the wrecking yard was for an 88 300zx but they are the same) But.... It worked out for the better because it just needed to have the plates, bands seals and modulator replaced, total cost to rebuild $900.00 (that also included a rear engine main seal - might as well do it while the trans is out of the car). The guy told me that had I tried to have my old trans rebuilt, it would have cost me substantially more since it was whooped really bad, with bearing noises, metal shavings etc.
Perhaps all you need is a rebuild like mine, or do you have shavings in the fluid and or bearing noises?
I do recommend "The Transmission House" in North Hollywood, CA. on Lankershim. They told me after the repairs that I got a deal, and they dont usually touch 300zx's for under a grand. But if I were you, talk to the father not the son and get him to quote you a price. They stuck to their quote with me.
