tapping again!
84 300zx na 5spd
Okay, I did a search on tapping and only came up w/ a couple of results. Here's the situation. Cruise at normal highway speeds for a few minutes and when I come to an idle the valves or lifters are ticking. After a minute or so the sound goes away. When I change the oil this does not happen until about 2,000 miles. I run 10w-40 Castrol and have been changing it at just over 2,000 miles so as not to hear this ticking. I have heard some people say that it is normal. Fact is these engines didn't sound this way when they were new so how is this normal? Are they just saying it is normal for one w/ high miles? Is it that my oil is somehow breaking down at 2,000 miles or is it just that the lifters aren't up to par and when the oil starts to get thin they start making the noise? I have also noticed that just b/4 2,000 miles the oil pressure drops from 60psi to about 20psi. I haven't checked it w/ a manual gauge to see if it is reading correctly yet but I will. I haven't ever liked those electric oil pressure sending units anyways.
The lifters are only $10 a piece so I don't mind replacing them b/c the engine is in excellent condition other than this sound. I just replaced the plugs and checked compression while I had them out and all cylinders are above 150psi so the engine should be worth sinking $130 in for some lifters. I just want to make sure the lifters are the problem b/4 I pull it apart and waste the money.

mine does trhe same damn thing. i think its just one of those things that tends to happen on a car with nearly 170000 miles on it. i just keep the oil fresh every 3000 miles and dont drive it unnessecarily hard. i did that with my old '85 s10 blazer and that sucker was still going fine when i sold it with close to 500k miles on it. it was rebuilt once at around 200k and just kept on going.
