Searching for Short throw shifter 84 300ZX

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1984 50th Anniversary 300ZX and the shifter is going out. It tends to grab in certain gears (2nd & 4th) when the clutch is engaged it does not want to come out of gear. As well, I have a hard time getting it into those gears, it slightly grinds. So my local Nissan dealership told me that the inner workings of the shifter has gone bad and I need a replacement. I am looking for a replacement SHORT THORW SHIFTER, but having an extremely difficult time finding one to match this vehicle. I have gotten different info on what may or may not fit. The Z has a V-6 3.0 Turbo with a manual tranny of coarse. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to ZDriver!

A short throw shifter won't solve a gear grinding problem. If the hydraulic system & clutch are both working correctly, and it's still grinding, the syncros are shot, which means you get to rebuild your tranny, which means lots of $$$ and fun times.

Agreed. It doesn't sound like a short shifter will solve synchro issues.
Mine has always had a finicky 1st-to-2nd shift. It's not much of an issue since I started using Mobil1 synthetic dexron. The old T5 seems to like that better than gearoil or the 50:50 dexron:gearoil mix I used to use.

Thank you for the reposes- AGREED THE TRANNY IS SHOT The syncro is clearly having issues!! I will be purchasing a rebuilt transmission. But I am still have issues with the shifter, unless you feel the shifter is not an issue. (But please keep in mind I was having the shifter issue, not disengaging prior to the this syncro issue with the tranny). So I am still in need of help finding a short throw shifter, many thanks for any info you have.

Since it's an 84 Turbo, it has the Borg Warner T5 transmission. Search the web for "Borg Warner T5 short throw shifter."
